Yes, but the rigging takes some time to do

Turning a wheeled tractor into a non-purpose built logging yarder doesn't seem like a very good idea. There is a ton of torque on the downhill side that I doubt the 3-point lift arms could handle long term.

Don't think this is a problem, such solutions have been just for decades.

It sure is Bruce. In that type of steep terrain cable systems work where not much else will. Seems like a tractor size portable unit like that could be just the ticket in some places.

I've seen some "mini" versions of those, at sawmill/logging shows...

In small scale logging price is an very important factor, using a tractor as the base and power source makes sense. It moves it's self and the equipment over long distances cutting the cost of transportation.

Here in Europe tractors are used on many tasks that I think in us would be done by more special equipment.

Having watched enough of the History Channel's Swamp Logger Axe Men from Mars shows... I think that all of the pressures during operation of that yarder are taken up by the log jammed under the yarder as a base, and the guide wires coming off the top. I doubt the 3pt arms take much torque at all when it is set up and operating.

Blow this picture up and have a look...

There appears to be a bunch of videos of this machine in operation. Here's a link to just one of them. Neat video. 14 minutes long. About 3 minutes into it you can see the logs under it as a base.

Looks like a neat set up and very portable. But, I don't need one thank goodness.

That is a great way to utilize a good sized tractor with lots of PTO power. Awesome!

I may be mistaken, ut the tractor doesn't appear to receive much in the way of reaction forces from the winch - it all seems to be counteracted by cables. Very impressive in that they can shift some sizeable timber.
