To start your car and leave it idling unattended. IE: Warming up the car etc....They say it is an invitation to a thief to easily get away with your car....It is illegal on private property and public property.
Thats what the Chief of police said on the 6:00 P.M. news.

Yet I bet the cops there leave their cars locked and running while they are in the shop getting coffee like they do here /forums/images/graemlins/smirk.gif

Hi,
This web page just happened today. Must not be against the law here, I see people do it all the time.

The following is from the City of Dallas, TX, ordinances:

( SEC. 28-76.5. UNATTENDED MOTOR VEHICLES.
A person commits an offense if he stops, stands, or parks a motor vehicle and leaves it unattended without first stopping the engine, locking the ignition, removing the key from the ignition, effectively setting the brake on the vehicle, and, when standing upon any grade, turning the front wheels to the curb or side of the highway. (Ord. 20269)

Curios per sec. 28-76.5. Nothing stated AFTER the car has been parked.

Example. I park the car, go into a shop. Come out, then start the car to "warm it up".

Car has been started and left unattended AFTER I parked the vehicle and left it.

Splitting hairs I realize, but if I'm stupid enough to have my car stolen because I left it running unlocked, well, then it's on me.

Once the government starts protecting you, then they throw the reponsiblity back on you to protect yourself and make their job easier. Government then passes more laws to cover the loop holes and then continues to grow forever. Also it's a lot easier to give a ticket to the guy who left his car running and is now reporting a theft, then it is to find the thief who has left the scene.
Moral - Don't have the government do for you what you could do for yourself.

My wife just bought a new car that has the remote start feature standard as an accessory. Chev Malibu Maxx.
Nice features in addition to this one. She works at a bank and can hit the button and start the car. The car won't start if the key is in the ignition, and if the doors are not locked. Also, the car cannot be put into gear until a key is put in the ignition and turned to 'run'. Sorry to hear of more laws that are there to 'protect' us from our own insanity. Throw the bums out.

This thread reminds me of a story that took place more than a few years ago. My brother at the time worked for the family heating & air conditioning business. He stopped in front of the business to run in and pick up another employee. Because it was winter and cold he left the engine running to keep his vehicle warm. I was standing in the front office looking out the plate glass window when I saw an Akron Policeman bail out of the passenger side of a cruiser and before I could blink an eye he was on his way down the street with brothers truck. /forums/images/graemlins/mad.gif

You guessed it, leaving your vehicle running in the state of Ohio is illegal also. It cost brother a ticket and impound fee to get his wheels back that very same day. Do you think he was mad?

I never left my keys in my own vehicle after seeing that stunt........

Back many years ago when my dad was telling me to grow up all th time we use to not lock the doors to our house, the car keys never came out of the ignition and that was just the way it was. You could be at the local liquor store and you left the keys in the car and the windows would be down in the summer time. Yes I know you can't do that today but I firmly believe our government is taking too much control of us. If I want to leave my keys in my car I should have the right to do that. In Mike's case where his brother had a police man actually take his car that is steeling, I don't care if the keys where in the vehicle, that did not give the cop a right to take it. If illegal then he should have turned it off and wrote Mike's brother a ticket.

1.) It's against the law here to leave a running car unattended.

2.) It's NOT against the law to leave a TRUCK (commercial vehicle) running while unattended, even while it's ILLEGALLY parked in a residential neighborhood. (Fought that battle for my Mother-in-law. Neighbor, truck driver, leaves semi running for days on end in his driveway during winter. Right outside her bedroom window.)

3.) From personal observation in recent days, it SHOULD be illegal for SOME PEOPLE to leave a car running WHILE THEY ARE IN IT. Doesn't Christmas shopping bring out the best in some people?

4.) I passed our town's Police station this morning on my way to work. There were 3 squad cars sitting in the lot, running, un-attended. As Goober so eloquently said to Barney Fife, CITIZENS ARREST! CITIZENS ARREST!
