Lots of people do it here as well, evidently they don't know it is against the law or don't care. The next time the game warden comes visiting I will ask him if it is illegal to leave my tractor idling.... /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

I have many times wondered if that law applied to city busses stopped on a busy rd so that the driver can go in and drink a cup of coffee at a conveince store.

Based on all of these laws would autostart not break the laws of most states? Even though the doors are locked and the keys are removed the vehcile is running unattended. /forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif

Laws...chances are most of us are breaking laws daily without even realizing it. then we break more and just do not get caught. ie Speeding, Not coming to full stop at stopsign, etc...

I suspect that if we all were prosecuted for all laws we break that there would not be enough people left out of prison to feed those who are in prison /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

Possibly a technical violation due to the wording of some states' and cities' laws, although it's a little hard for me to imagine an officer dumb enough to take any enforcement action if the doors are locked and the key is not in the ignition. Sometimes the wording of certain laws leaves something to be desired.

Apparently some folks disagree with a law that requires you to remove the keys from an unattended vehicle, so without expressing an opinion as to whether such laws are right or wrong, good or bad, properly worded or not, I can tell everyone the reasoning behind such laws.

I know from experience that a large number of the vehicles stolen had the keys in the ignition, which makes it easy for opportunistic thieves, so many of them would not have been stolen if the key had been removed. So, let's suppose I leave the keys in my car and it's stolen. I'm going to call the police to report it. That uses some of the police department's resources; the phone lines, salary for the person answering the phone, maybe paper and pencil if they write the report, computer resources (it'll get entered into computers whether the original report is hand written or not), etc. Now that report will get assigned to an auto theft detective and he'll have to write or type a report on whatever investigation he does, maybe a lengthy one, maybe almost none, but he'll spend some time on it either way. Along the way, police supervisors will have to review and approve the original report as well as the follow-up report(s). Now we're all paying taxes to support a police department. Is it fair for your tax dollars to be spent because I didn't take the keys out of my car?

Now I'm going to report the theft to my insurance company and they're going to pay me for the car; probably less than what it was worth to me, so I lose money, but at least they'll pay out "fair market value". And where did that money come from? Insurance premiums, and the more they pay out the higher all our premiums go. So, is it fair for your insurance premiums to go up because I didn't take the keys out of my car?

And, yes, I grew up in small towns and out in the country. My parents never had or needed more than one key for the car because it was never removed from the ignition. There was one key for the house; hung on a nail behind the front door so it wouldn't get lost if it were ever needed. I can't recall it ever being needed or used.

As for the officer jumping in someone's vehicle and taking off in it to impound it . . . it's highly unlikely (although possible) that it was the officer's decision. Enforcement policies and procedures are usually determined by the highest ranking police officials, not the officer on the street, and approved by the governing body, whether city council, county commissioners, or state legislature.

There's probably someone who will disagree with any law, but if enough people disagree and let their law makers know, it'll get changed.

The other way to get a law changed is for one of the people's representatives to get bit by it. I don't remember the dates or who it was but early in the history of having seat belts required in new cars, they were wired so that the car would not start or run if the belt was not connected. A senior congressman had the sysetm malfunction on his car in the midst of Washington traffic and collected a ticket and impound fee for blocking traffic. and failing to move his vehicle.

That requirement was quickly squashed.

I said if "enough" people disagree, and I guess one's enough if it's the right one. /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif

Yep in the "Peoples Republic of OHIO" it is pretty much illigal to do just about anything... 3rd most number of cops per mile of road, behind CA and NY. so if you go into court to FIGHT one of these MADE UP laws which by the way are only CODES not actuallyb LAWS you could end up winning BUT will cost you more anyway due to the fact you STILL have to pay Court Fees, Lawer Cost and impound fees ect. just because you prooved you were in the right does not neglect or remove the costs THEY seem to think you should owe regardlessly...

It cost me 1500+ in legal fee's to prove that I didn't let un-insurred drivers drive a truck that I didn't own nor ever own! also lost 4~5 days of work and was hand cuffed and drug out of a car wash in front of boss & friends with out even an explaination as to WHY I was being arrested and there was NO warrent that the cop said he had! cost me 100 buck NON-REFUNDED bail too! /forums/images/graemlins/mad.gif

legal system needs an overhaul, I recogmend they start by tossing the lawers, judges, Prosucuters and bailifs into jail and let them figure out a correct way to legally & Farelybe set free...

the latest was this guy, who PROOVED using DNA that he didn't kill his mother-N-Law & rape his neice as the cooks (aka prosicution) refused to listen so he actually had tpo FIND the guy who did do it and prove that this other guy DID do it and even then still had to set in jail for 3+ more months while the powers that be sat on there a$$'s and wouldn't do much... finally THE STATE attny general made them let him out!?!? so MAYBE he is OK. :rolling: eyes this guy did 7+ yrs for something that the courts had 0 evidence aginst him... because the then 4 yr old girls said the guy who did it looked something like unkle wahats his name.... that was ONLY evidencec they had, well I think they MAY have fabricated some other evidence but it was totally faulse ...

sorry about the rant... I am about fed up with OHIO if ya can't tell.. soon will be the tax issue, (humm how many do I have now?) 1. fed income, 2. fed fica, 3. state income, 4. local income in town I work at, 5. local income tax in city I live, 6. School income tax's where I live *3 7. property tax's (of which I think there are about 6 multi-mill adders, fire & resuce, school opperatings leveys for 3 different areas, JVS, grade & high schools.) 8. sales taxes of 6~7% on everything retail, (except farm items)...

now I feel like I'm actually paying out 3.95 dollars for every dollar I make.../forums/images/graemlins/mad.gif the only thing they haven't taxed is the AIR & farm items... oh wait, I think they have a clean air tax started now /forums/images/graemlins/frown.gif

Here's another one.

In Texas it's illegal to shoot buffalo from the second story window of a hotel.
