Most of this stuff is chicken little claiming the sky is faling - in the 70's we were told that the next ice age was approaching and now it's global warming...

This is already happening in several european countries. I believe that Italy has had a negative population growth for quite some time. This has become a problem due to the low labor/geriatric ratio.

This page gives some interesting information (I can't vouch for the statistical validity). There was also an article on NPR on Oct 11 specifically about Italy, with a response here.
