( A birthday? We did a fun one for our sons 6th birthday. I went out and scraped away some dirt about 8'x8'x1' deep. We put some sand and stuff in. Then, we hid all kinds of dinosaur toys, some reall fossils, and the parts to a wooden Tyranosauras model in there.

Nobody knew about it. I got the kids around, and went into this talk about using the tractor, and finding fossils. They went for it and had a blast! )

Re. backyard paleontology I think this is the ultimate classic story, circulated by email a few years ago.
The guy sends his finds to the Smithsonian, much to their amazement:

Re: This must be my \"bay back\" for getting the bota

There is about a 5 gl bucket/box below the hand pump in the ground the water dumps and drains right back into it. The little stream is dry.
I plan later(much later) to put a little (I hope little) fish pond on the other side of the walk
