This one\'s different

LITTLETON - A local man was killed late Wednesday in a farming accident at his home on Bartlett Road off U.S. Route 1. Kevin Conlogue, 31, was using an older-style front-end loader to put rolled bales of hay over a fence when the accident occurred, according to Sgt. Hugh Turner of the Maine State Police. Turner said the loader bucket's boom arms were attached at the back of the unit behind the cab and had to pass by the cab as they were raised and lowered. Conlogue had used the loader to lift the hay bale and then he apparently leaned out of the right side of the unit. The boom accidentally lowered and crushed Conlogue between the right boom arm and the loader. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

Though it had not been determined officially why the boom came down, there was the possibility that Conlogue bumped the hydraulic control lever when he leaned out, Turner said.

Re: This one\'s different

In the 10 years ive been an operator since i was 13 ive run various loaders new and old, I got to run an old Michigan load that was rear steered and you sat between the arms just infront of the pivots. Ive seen all sorts of folks climb under them holding onto the control to climb in. One day we came intos work and one of the the laborers hated to climb over the arms so he would leave them up when the boss wasnt on the job. oneday he was about to gt of full bucket of gravel in the air and the second he steppe between the arm and subframe the main lift line blew it dropped like a hammer and he lost use of his arm for good. It just takes asecond for something like that to happen.
