I know it is not directly tractor related but since we use computers to talk about tracotrs I have yet another question.

Any guesses as to why when pulling up the Internet Explorer or Firefox or even while already on the internet such as here at TBN I move to a different forum or to a different website or just try to open the browser and I get " This page cannot be displayed. This only happens on the lap top which is wireless. The desktop continues to function normally. I have tried repowering the router (unplugging), turning the wirless button on the laptop on and off etc. The signal indicator and status indicates there is a signal--yet--"this page cannot be displayed". I have found that sometimes I just keep at it and it starts working again or if I reboot it starts working again. This only started the last few days but then only recently have I been wireless all the time with the laptop. I suspect a router problem but it could also be software such as the ZoneAlarm? or mayne some hardware issue?---what y'all think? Coincidently all AOL was removed--best I know and ZoneAlarm became the firewall. It works, it don't work, then it works--what is going on? /forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif

When it happens to me it seems to be because of the site I'm trying to link to, or the link (address) has been blocked or changed. When I finally get back to the site there is usually a discussion of an earlier problem with thier server.

I'm thinking it's a wireless connectivity issue. Since the pages display properly on your hard wired PC, that kind of lets out the actual router causing the problem. You might try changing the channel your wireless is operating on, probably currently using channel 6, what most default to. Just a guess but may be worth a shot.

Good luck.

I'd blame it on an intermittently poor or blocked wireless signal. The error you're getting means that your browser timed out while waiting for the server to respond. More than likely, that means that packets between your wireless card and the router were either dropping or interfered with. That, in and of itself, is also not unusual since walls and/or wall composition can sometimes create problems. Just hit 'Reload' and try again, or move to another spot in your house and see if the signal isn't better.

I don't know, my wife has a couple of sites she goes to regularly, but one she cannot get to from her laptop loads just fine on the hardwired PC. She also gets the same message........

Zonealram for firewall?
I use that too, next time it happens try shutting down ZA and trying the web again. My comuter does the exact same thing, restarting is the only solution I have found, though shutting down ZA does work it means that you then have no firewall.
Let me know if you find a solution, so far restarting the comp is all that will work for me

You might want to try hitting the "REFRESH" button on your browser first. I'm not sure with wireless if the laptop is in constant communication with the router..in which case it may time out. If you refresh your current page and then go to select another forum, that may help. If not, I hope someone out there has the answer for you.

When it's happened to me, I just shut off the wireless card on the laptop. And then cycle it back on and search for the wireless connection again. That usually takes care of it.

I don't see what OS you are using but with the Dell D500 WIN XP that I am using when that happens to me, there is an icon in the system tray (where the clock is) that looks like a computer with ")))" beside it. I right click on that and choose "REPAIR".

This has consistantly resolved the problem. Before I started using the "Repair" feature I would disable the Wirless NIC Card, Remove, and Re-Install. That's not possible now that I can use the internal Wireless Connection. Now, the old way would be a reboot, which my wife has to do on the OLD IBM running Win98 /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif.

Thanks for all the helpful ideas.

The operating system is Windows XP. When this happens I have hit the "repair connection" icon and also have tried cycling the wireless power buttn. I have also disconnected the router power cord and repowered it. I am beginning to think the router is very weak, I rarely show more than two bars (out of five) and usually just one and I am probably not more than 20 feet from the the thing. I think it is intermittantly loosing solid connection if only for a micro second and this confuses the computer or gets something out of whack between the router and the computer. Sometimes it starts working again but usually I have to reboot. The router is a standard Linksys wireless G. If it is a problem with the wirless modem n the computer--built in--would using a wireless G card plugged into the computer trouble shoot that? If it worked and did not have the problem then it would be a hardware issue with myinternal wireless card? Thanks. J
