States are looking at ways to TAX YOU for miles driven every day. Putting GPS in your vehicles. Because all the NEW energy efficient car's are using less gas the States are looking for ways to get higher taxes to compensate for tax revenues lost at the pump. So you will pay taxes on gas and be taxed for driving.

Yes this world is upside down.

Darned if you do Darned if you don't.

They've been talking about that for a while. Consider though, fuel taxes are what pays for our roads. It'll be a cold day down below though, before they put a GPS in my vehicle so they can track where I go; not that I have anything to hide, just don't like the concept.(although if we were aware if what "they"know about us it would be scary)

Dont you guys submit your odometre readings annually when you buy your tags? They could simply increase the tax at the pumps like many other countries in the world.

Didn't I just read somewhere that the feds are forcing the auto manufacturers to put 'black boxes' in all new vehicles in a year or so??

No doubt crap like that is coming, but I'll do anything I can to not participate.

Automotive 'black boxes' raise privacy issues ? USATODAY.com

Already have them. I've heard of them being used to deny warranty claims... not sure if that's true or not.

Why not ?? Have you all seen the Progressive Insurance (coincidence on the name??) commercials for the 'black box' you install in your car in an attempt to get a discount on your insurance ???? Fat chance anyone with on in their car is actually getting a discount. I can hear them now..... "Sorry Mrs. Smith, we see here you exceeded the speed limit by .5 mph twice in six months. We are going to have to double your premium".

Not in NY. The issue with flat milage based taxation to the registering state is the issue of who gets paid for the milage if you drive out of state...

That horse has been out of the barn a loooooooooooooonnnnnnnnnnnngggggg time.

Factory installed black boxes have been used in court cases to indicate speed, force of impact, brakes applied, etc.....

If you have most "smart" phones with you in the car, you are already being tracked.

Didn't quite kick in in 1984, but Orwell was not off by much.

I was thinking of Orwell when I read this. For the above menrioned reasons the GPS in my phone is (alledgedly) shut off. And there have been previous discussions about the tracking capabilities of Onstar...
