don't get discouraged too quickly, believe it or not there are deals out there that are exactly what you are looking for. They won't be new or maybe they won't be real shiny but they are there. there are a lot of dealers that will take an older tractor in on trade just to seal a deal and then they stick it out back untill someone like you ask's about it, or they put it in an auction the tractor never see's the front lot where the preety one's are.I'm getting ready to trade my old ford in and get a new tractor because it's too big for the wife to mow with.It has live pto ,3 pt, power steering,40 hp. all the goodies that you need and I'm only going to get 1800$ out of it. But here where I live all the farmers are big equipment user's and my tractor is to old and small for them but it' too big for a homeowner to mow their front yard with so I 'll trade it in and since I did'nt pay much more for it the hit won't be bad . Ive used this tractor for 4 years and the biggest money I put in it was new rubber, BUT I looked for a year to find it.I bought the tractor and front loader for 2200$ ,rebuilt the bucket changed hyd. cylinders, put in a 125 ' X 15' drive bushhogged every week (summer) last year for 9-12 hrs and moved snow and whatever else I could find to do with it. You can find deals but sometimes it isn't easy. Just be careful when buying used, you might get more hobby time than you want. /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Since you are mechanically inclined, you sound like you might go the route I did. Got a Yanmar 2000B, 20 pto hp-$2900, new rotary cutter, -$479, 5'box blade-$224, and dirt scoop-$190. You can get a nice Ford 8n tractor-apprx. 25 pto hp. for around $2500. That will do all you need to do for well under $4000.

Ken: Buy trailertrash's tractor & pay the shipping from middle Ohio to Sout East Michigan (can't imagine it would be $3 grand) and you've got what you wanted.

WVBILL
are you trying to get me in trouble with the powers that be ?
(just kidding ) I didn't mean for my reply to sound like a "for sale" ad just to point out what one of the alternatives are,but if he's close enough I can point him to a bunch of older tractor sale places because I know where most of them are, like I said I looked for a year before I found mine. I don't know his location but detroit is about 170 miles from me.

Sorry - I did think you were meaning that you were looking to trade it in. /forums/images/graemlins/blush.gif

Point is, though, if you're close enough to an area where prices are low it's worth taking a look at the cost of shipping.

Ken should be able to have it transported for a few hundred dollars or get a good friend with a strong truck and trailer and trailer it back for him... /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

For $1800. w/ loader, a running 40 PTO hp tractor is a bargain...! I think Ken should take a trip this weekend and visit his new tractor... /forums/images/graemlins/blush.gif

What do all you guys think...? /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Ohio to Michigan wouldn't be a bad trip at all. Heck what kind of tractor is it? For $1800 with a loader and new rubber that is a great deal.

I am thinking I may get a true lawn tractor for this summer. First on the list that I need this equipment for is lawn maintence. No way I am using my old push mower for this much. And I have a friend that I can barrow his tractor and brush hog for the tough stuff a couple times throughout the summer. This was I can look all summer and really decide on what I want/need. Plus save up a little more for somehting a little newer.

I need something to cut a nice true front and back yard. Whcihc I think a larger heavier tractor would tear up. But, I dont think a smaller tractor would do to much with the other landscaping, horse care and barn raising that I want to do in the future. So, the lawn I have NOW is what I must take care of firstt. So, I think it will end up being two tractors for me. /forums/images/graemlins/cool.gif Unfortunatley the little boring one must come first. /forums/images/graemlins/frown.gif But, that gives me the time and money to get an even better 'fun tractor' in the future. /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Thanks EVERYONE!
Ken H.
