I have a engine start issue on my JD2305 that I'm hoping for sounds familiar to someone here while I wait for the tech manuals to arrive.

Scenario:

- Everything worked perfectly until this past Saturday. About 10 minutes into mowing I killed the mower to help my 5 yr old with something and when I tried to restart I only heard clicking noise (possibly a crank or two but not enough to start). As of today I only get clicks.

- Jumping the battery to car (car engine off or idling) yields clicking noise with some slow cranks, but no starts.

- Jumping the battery with car revving fairly good cranks better and allows the tractor to start.

- Once running, no issues until I stop the mower.

- Battery has been confirmed good, cable connections off battery have been checked, cleaned, and/or jumpered around.

- I've checked all connections I could find, 'tapped' the starter, and did a curisoury inspection of the brushes.

Seems like it's down to starter or solenoid but not quite sure best way to diagnose at this point. Dealer indicated it would be ~2 weeks for JD to ship the CDRom (grrh - seems like a disk could be burned and shipped in a day or so if there's not a bunch already laying on shelf somewhere - I could probably get a new transmission is half that time)

Any case my grass is continuing to grow and I can only imagine the cost of even the simplest repair if I have to take it in.

Thank in advance for any thoughts or suggestions on tests to perform,
ADin

How was the battery "confirmed good"?

Like Kenny, I wonder about how the battery was tested. I've heard of cases where the battery tested ok in a static test, but would fail when loaded because of a bad cell.

I had the battery tested on a tester at both Walmart and NAPA.

One more point leading me away from the battery is that some of my jumps were tried with the tractor battery removed and behavior didn't really change. E.g. It clicked, turned over a time or two but would not start unless the car was high revving. I have two sets of jumper cables (cheap and heavy duty) and behavior was same with either. Given my car battery has 50% more cranking amps than the JD I would have thought it should have turned over easily.

Can you temporarily hookup your car battery to the tractor battery terminals to try starting it? This would clarify a hazy area about jumper cables and long leads ect.

I made a set of jumper cables with 2/0 welding lead to jump start my dozers a few years back and thats what you need to get full current to the machine. So a quick swap with a known good battery would be a good test.

Also have you checked your battery voltage before and after starting engine?

I hope your right but I don't think i've wasted enough hours to come to that conclusion yet. I figure I have another 15 hour to go. :)

I did measure the battery voltage initially and thought it was fine at that point but I don't remember the actual number although it was 12.something volts. I will remeasure when I get home along with measuring my car battery (idling and revved). I never actually measured the car battery voltage as I assumed it was sufficient. Not quite sure how to measure under load but I assumed that what the NAPA handheld testers would check (e.g. Bad cells).

To further clarify, during the various jumping process I jumped from the car to tractor battery terminals and car to cables without tractor battery, in addition to bypassing tractor battery cables at various points (different ground and power points to rule out cables).

Take a chance with a new battery- I would bet a beer that it will be the fix eventually ...

When I put the new battery in, I would pay a lot of attention to the battery cables, and the heavy solenoid cables also. Check both ends...

I'm with the battery crowd. I'm also going to throw you a twist. Check the ground cable from the battery to the frame and from the frame to the engine. Put a wrench on the bolts to make sure they are clean and tight.
