Has anyone run a three point splitter on a deere 790? It seems to have a lower gpm rating campaired to splitter flow needs and I do not want to invest in one and be disappointed. I have used stand alone units that were really slow and it drove me crazy.

No I personally have not used one. I like the faster stand alone units because it usually takes a much larger tractor to get the GPM needed to satisfy me.

But the 790 specs @ 5.4gpm and 2050psi

So if you got a splitter with a 4"x24" cylinder with a 2" rod, it would take 14.1 seconds to extend and 10.9 to retract. Total cycle time of 25 seconds. And it would develop just under 13 tons of force.

You may want to compare those #'s to what you can get in a stand alone unit. Or another option would be to get a 3PH splitter with its own pump/resivoir.

But also keep in mind that to achieve even that slow 25second cycle, you will need to run your tractor @ PTO rpm. If you only wanted to run @ half throttle, that would just about double the cycle time.

I run one on a Deere 750, which is a direct ancestor to the 790.

I don't use the tractor hydraulics for the reasons stated by the other poster. My splitter came with it's own PTO-driven pump. Plenty of power and good cycle times. I do run it at PTO-rated RPM, but that's usually best for a diesel anyway. Fuel consumption is very reasonable.
