Yanmar 1610D
I just purchased a Yanmar 1610 D.On page 21 (Starting the tractor) Item #5 in the operating manual for that model# tractor. It states to pull the throttle all the way back ( Full throttle). On page 22 (Cold weather starting) Item # 1 it states (Push throttle completely forward) It has just gotten cold here in Ky.,and I don't want to try the trial & error process as far as the throttle being all the way forward or all the way back for (Cold weather starts). What would be the proper procedure for cold weather.

moe123, Welcome to TBN

I Cold Start all the (MY) Yanmars the same way. Throttle in the off position; De-compression handle engaged and spin the engine up to where the engine oil light goes out. I then ease the throttle position to idle and start engine.

Winter or summer, I follow this procedure on the first cold start of the day. Oil supplied to all the critical areas of the engine (crankshaft, cam, rods and main bearings) prolong the life of the engine.

Regards, Mark

The original Yanmar operator manuals say to start the tractor in full throttle position. , which on a Japanese model such as the YM1610 would be back.

The YM2500 I had started with the throttle all the way forward (open). Once engine started, throttle back to idle. Not sure if all are this way, but this is the way mine started best in hot or cold weather.

I'm sure that when the manual refers to throttle all the way forward, (off), it is talking about when using the decompression lever, either that, or the manual has been incorrectly translated. You realize it is not a factory manual, (if in English).

Hi all,
so to get this straight, to start in cold (or first start anytime):
1. throttle to off
2. decompression lever pulled, crank engine until oil pressure light comes off
3. close decompression lever and move throttle to full? Do I keep the starter cranking this whole time, or stop inbetween closing the decompression lever and opening the throttle?

Is opening the throttle to full bad on a diesel? Do I run the risk of flooding? Thanks!

Here is the logic behind the information that we put in that manual.

The original manual states that, when warm, the throttle should be in the open (fast) position until the engine fires and then immediately idled back down. When it is cold, that blast of full throttle that comes between moving your hand from the key to the throttle can, in our opinion, be very hard on the engine. We felt that the low idle starting position would be the safest way to start the tractor in the cold. We have had many diesel mechanics agree with that technique.

I checked several 2 & 3 cylinder Yanmar manuals. All stated to put throttle at full throttle when starting. The key can be operated with the left hand . The decompression lever & throttle can be operated with the right hand. When using the thermostart, once the tractor starts to fire the throttle should be moved to half throttle & the key to the thermostart position until the engine runs smoothly. In my experience the tractors start better at full throttle than in the other positions. Yanmar has been building diesel engines. Yanmar has been building diesel engines since 1930, I think their engineers probably kniow what they are talking about.
