Throttle-Forward or Back

Full throttle for me too. It gets pretty cold here and that seems to work best. Read the same thing in my manual also.

I was going to install a radiator heater but there is really no room for one on my machine.

Thanks for the follow-up responses... I started my tractor yesterday for the first time in about 6 weeks. It was in the mid 30s when I got it going. It took many minutes of cranking to get going, but it eventually did. The only way I could get it running was full throttle open-- This was on the fourth attempt, cranking for about a minute each time. I let the starter rest about 2 minutes between attempts...

Cranking any engine too long freaks me out... I'll heat under a tarp next time...

Something's not right. I suspect you have bad fuel. That made similar problems for me last winter. Fresh diesel plus Power Service solved my problem.

After reading this thread I got curious and tested my YM240 (YM2000) to see what would happen, since I seldom start it in our coldest weather. It hasn't been started for weeks. Overnight low was 34, temperature in the barn now 48. I tried it without the Thermostart. (Ordinarily I would use the Thermostart and expect an easy start).

I always spin it first with the compression released (and zero throttle) to get oil pressure, then start spinning it a second time with the compression released to ease the initial strain on the starter.

Results:
With throttle at 1/3 (= about 1500 warm idle) it fired the instant I let go of the compression release, so I let go of the key too. It fired evenly but lost rpm during about 5 strokes. No smoke.

Throttle set 2/3 (= about 2200 rpm warm idle) it fired immediately as I let go of the compresion release. I held the key engaged for another second. It started without a fuss. Slight smoke for the first second until it reached 1500 rpm then I throttled it back.

Comment - This wasn't cold enough to be a problem. And obviously the colder it is the more initial throtle is needed.

I wanted to harvest the lone persimmon tree down in the back of the apple orchard so I tied my harvest buckets and ladder onto the loader bucket and drove on down - see attached. Yeah our winters are pretty mild.

Thanks for the input. After yesterday's grinding start, I've put in some fuel conditioner to get a cetane boost and assist with cold starts. We'll see what effect it has. Tonight it's 5F with windchill -12F. I was going to try starting tonight to move some snow, but will wait for warmer weather (it's better for both me and the tractor!!) -regards -arthr

Dude u gonna burn ur starter up!!!! 10 seconds at time only. then wait about a minute. r u using ur decompression release? R u using ur ts? My 2210 wont start unless heated if below say 30 degrees. It has tremendous compression and the yammer hammer is good and loud. When it is very cold the starter motor won't turn it without using the decompression release.

Thanks, Great. I've been trying the compression release- From the posts here, I've got some new tricks to try and hope to do that over the holiday weekend. I'll report back my trails... Thanks all. -arthr

Also make sure u r using winter oil. Ur starter motor will never turn the engine with thick oil in cold weather. Some guys use mobil 1. I don't trust it with an old motor. I feel it is great if u use from the get go. I cover my tractor hood with a plastic tarp and slip a $35.00 oil filled radiator under the tarp. Then I don't even worry about it starting. Any temp above 30ish and they should turn with enough rpms to fire up.
esp if u use the ts.....but only work ur starter motor for 10 seconds at a time. All the manuals say this.......

ps: I just set the throttle to idle speed. If I can spin the motor with any rpm's after letting go of the comp release she fires up everytime......

Well, tried all the suggestion here, now can't start at all. I tried to start this AM to move snow and after 4-5 attempts to start, the battery was too weak to turn the starter over anymore (low 20sF). Charged the battery, was only able to crank the engine over for a couple of more attempts... guess time to call the plow guy... Thanks to all suggestions, looks like I gotta test the battery now...

I have found most motor vehicles have a certain way they
like to be started. You probably just need to find the trick for
your tractor. Sounds like you have had alot of tips from other
experts. Now a few from a rookie (ME)!
My 1500D has started pretty easily last week at -10 and -18F
Use Power Service additive.
If possible keep it in a shed.
Trickle charge your battery (USE A GOOD BATTERY)
Set throttle at one third to one half.
Hold decompress. lever.
Crank over until oil light goes off.
Release decompress. lever when engine fires.
Quickly lower throttle to idle when started.
This works for me , maybe i am lucky
Tractor is a blast to plow snow with.
Just my 2 cents.
good luck,
CHRIS.......

tried all suggestion here? Do u know the weight of oil in your tractor? Did you heat your engine up with a heater under a tarp? I can't believe u did all this and ur tractor won't start. There is another thread on here where the guy took his starter to a rebuilder! U could have a bad battery. Seems terrible to pay someone to plow when u have a ym in the shed. It is in a shed? Buy a $35 portable elec oil filled heater from Walmart set it on high and stick it under your tractor for 2 hrs. Cover the hood with a plastic tarp also. Charge ur battery again while warmin the rig. Ur machine will fire up....
