My 1910 needs at least half throttle to start while my L3400 starts great at idle. I wouldn't start it any faster than needed for a reliable start.

On my old ford gassers.. i aim for about 800 rpm// on my ford diesels.. i aim for 1000 rpm.. on my allis G.. I go with lowest idle, and with my IH cub and the JD-B I go for any setting that will get them started /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif ( actually.. cub floods easilly.. and will ONLY start at idle... While JD wants full fuel and choke.. )

I have tried the 1/2 throttle like the manual says. Engine does not seem to start as easy as at lowest setting (little over 1000 RPM's). Let it run for a few seconds, then advance to 1500 until warmed up.

I start my Kubota L3000DT at the lowest throttle setting where I return the throttle for a few seconds before I shut down the engine.

In cold weather a few seconds on the glow plugs then hit the starter side of the switch and the engine comes to life at a much higher RPM than the throttle is set at. After a few seconds the RPM's smooth out at which point I increase the engine RPM to about 1200 RPM for a few minute warm up.

In warm weather and not using the glow plugs at the same throttle setting the engine upon starting does not rev up like it does when it is colder and the glow plugs are used. The engine runs fine at the lowest throttle setting however I don't usually idle the tractor under 1000 RPM.

My 4115 manual says 1/2 - 3/4 throttle. Yikes!!! 3/4 throttle when it's -10 F /forums/images/graemlins/shocked.gif...seems excessive to me, even when warmed with block heater. I just can't bring myself to start it at the 2,000 rpm range. Since it starts easily at 11-12 hundred rpm, that's where I start it and let the oil flow a bit before kicking it up to about 1/2 (1500, or so). It just sounds happier to me that way, but then what do I know /forums/images/graemlins/smirk.gif.

I start my L3010 at idle summer and winter with no problem. On the L175 I used to own I had to set the throttle at about half open to get it to start. As soon as the engine started I would pull the throttle back to about 900rpm. The Yanmar in my father's boat is the same way. Even in the summer it won't start at idle. I think it probably has something to due with the less sophisticated fuel system on the older diesels that requires more throttle to get them to start.

I start mine at about 1/4 throttle regardless of the temp. Starts easy without excessive RPMs. But I don't live on the land where I keep my tractor and the temp is rarely below freezing when I go up there and start it.

Unless there's some sort of automatic throttle increaser on a diesel, you need to run the throttle up about half way or so to avoid some rocky startups when cold. You don't have to let it actually rev more than about 1500 rpm. Just pull back on the throttle if it wants to rev too much.

The old Benzes, incl. my present 1983 one, has a hand throttle that you turned to set the idle speed up in case you aren't too handy with the foot throttle. They'll often start and die, start and die if you don't have the idle set high enough.

I shut my B7510HST off at 1000 rpm and leave the throttle there when restarting. No problems so far (I have a whoppin' 33 hours on the little beast). But, it rarely gets below freezing here in the North Valley, so I don't know how it would behave in really cold weather.

I guess I forgot the lawnmower... the L175 has to be at 1/3 throttle and preheated. SuperC is gas and starts at idle, usually.
