I figure Im dumber than the manufacturer, so I TRY to start it like the manual says. /forums/images/graemlins/smirk.gif

Kubota, L3130 owners manual, pp 21 says, "Set the throttle to about 1/2 way..."

WELL, ....MY halfway is typically about 1/3 way! /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

1/3 to 1/2 throttle makes sense to me and might to you, too.

edit:
Start up - 1000 rpms
Warm up - 1200 rpms.

Hi Doug,
My dealer recommends a higher than idle speed for warm ups up here in Me. as the manual suggests.I had the M5400 last year and it took for ever to warm up at idle in zero deg. weather, and that was coming out of a warm garage at start up.He mentioned something about oil circulation etc. and after doing what he suggested it warmed up much quicker.I usually start at idle as my tractor is in a 65 deg. garage and than go to around 1200 rpms for the warm up and that works fine for me.If mine was outside in the cold with a block heater on I would do the same thing, start at idle and go to around 1200 rpms. for my tractor. The Kubota people must know what is best.Good Luck,

I'm with Bird on this...

The throttle is set at the lowest RPM, then, once the engine starts (and the oil light goes out), I increase throttle until the tach indicates 1200-1500 RPM. That's for warm up.

Same applies to cold weather except I'll use the glow plugs for 15-20 seconds before cranking the starter. Warm up RPM might be a bit higher then 1500 RPM...depending on the temperature.

My '89 Case IH manual says to increase the throttle about 1/3, but no more than 1000 rpm. The diesel revs slowly at startup so I can hold the rpms to about 800-900 until the oil pressure light goes out and circulates the oil a bit. I'll generally warm it at 1000-1200 a bit and then leisurely drive off to the the job at hand. The climate is relatively warm here, and I don't have any tractor work to do if the tempratures get below the lower 40's.

You guys are going to laugh but my dads JD 870 says set throttle to FULL THROTTLE start engine and immediately back off to 1200-1500. Don't think I'll be doing that!!!!!

That is very interesting. Sure sounds odd, but I'm curious as to their reason for recommending that. I always hesitate to go against what a mfr. says to do, but if it starts well at low idle, I wouldn't want to start up at full throttle either. Seems to be that the way the pump and/or injectors were designed they don't deliver as much fuel at low idle as JD thinks the engine needs to start properly. Again, that is odd, I'd love to know where they're coming from on that one.

AFIK, all governed, mechanical injection pumps start at full 'throttle', regardless of the position of the throttle lever. The position of the throttle lever only determines the speed that the engine will idle at once it has already started.

When I started the JD2305 this morning, I followed the guidelines in the manual stating 1/2 to 3/4 throttle. It started but blew blue smoke all over. When I start it at the lowest throttle setting as I normally do, no smoke, and it runs at about 1200. I don't see the sense of loading up the cylinders when no throttle starts just fine. Anyways, it never gets cold here in Phoenix. This morning it was 58 degrees and reached a nice 71 degrees for the day.

I have a BX. 10F degrees this morning. I tried the throttle at idle.
Glow plugs, count 10. 5 second crank-no start.
Glow plugs, count 15. 5 second crank-no start.
Glow plugs, count 20. 5 second crank-no start.

Put throttle at 1/2.
Glow plugs, count 10. 2 second crank-Houston, we have ignition!

In cold weather, I believe you need more than idle setting on kubotas for it to start. Blue smoke is normal. Look at a Caterpillar or big Komatsu some time when they start in below 20 degree temps. They burn blue for minutes, not seconds.

My guess is those that reccomend full or half do not have the auto full fuel start option on govenor. I haven't had a chance to read my L175 service manual yet, but it sure won't start at low idle.
