I should extend just past the bucket teeth when installed. Mine is hydraulic and I wouldnt have it any other way. It is so much more useful when you can move it to clamp any size object. I can pick up everything from a fist sized rock to large tree and not have to move from my seat.

Based on other reviews here I purchased a fixed thumb from these folks .... Hound Dog Backhoe Thumbs. I have one of the weld on thumbs. The picture in the url link shows a well positioned thumb. The keys are the base position relative to bucket pivot point(so not to bind bucket when curled) and the length to match bucket tip(to grasp objects). My fixed thumb works well but as previous poster mentioned I would much prefer to go with hydraulic thumb. The folks at MIE now offer that for some of their thumbs......Gary
