I have a 1996 F150 V-8 with automatic transmission, around 80,000 miles. As I am driving down the road at normal speed, the transmissions bumps every now and then. I don't know how to describe it any better than that. It seems to do it more often if I am pulling a trailer. Does this sound like a precursor to more serious problems? Do you think a transmission service could potentially help alleviate or cure the problem? Anyone ever experienced a similar problem? I know answers will only be guesses, but I'm interested in hearing your opinions.

Get it seviced asap. Make sure they drop the pan and change the filter in addition to a back flush. My buddy just had the same issue on his with 230,000 miles. This cured it for the time being.

Swap in Mercon V fluid while servicing. Also get a bottle of friction modifier from the Ford dealer. I was the Ford dealer transmission guy. Fixed a bunch this way.

I'm assuming its an AODE/ 4R70W. It has a mostly square pan with a single bump in the middle. If it's the E4OD then it takes regular Mercon fluid and it lightly needs an overhaul.
