i had some guineas for a couple of weeks. it took that long for the coyotes, fox and hawks to kill them all.

My neighbor across the street had a dozen guineas when we moved here a year ago - now they're down to 2. Good Coyote food!

WalMart sells a brand called REPEL PERMANONE in a yellow can in the camping area. It is 0.5% permethrin. It is wonderful and costs around $4.00 for a 6oz can (based on my memory).

Nothing like seeing 50 ticks between your boots and knees and knowing they will never make it any further.

And to save money on the Frontline, buy the packs for 130 pound dogs and put one pack on 2 medium dogs or 3 small dogs. This can cut your cost by 50% to 75%.

Our vet told us that too.. buy a large dose pack and divide it for our small dogs.. etc..

By the way.. that works great on chiggars too. I've tried it.

Also.... I have heard reports from an older friend of mine... that rubbing down with diesel after an infestation of lice.. uh.. the kind that like the 'deep south'.. well.. it gets them too.. course' he told me it burnt him up pretty bad untill he could get the stuff washed off... I've uh.. never had to test that.. so I don't reccomend it (wink)...

I remember back when i was younger.. it we got into chiggars, we had a small brown glass bottle of ? lysol cleaner.. you added a few cap fulls to a big wash tub and then filled with water... set or stand in it for a few minutes.. no chiggars..... stuff smelled awfull.. Anyone know if that stuff is still on the market?

Here's a thought.. About a month ago, while brush cutting, i saw about 20 ticks on my right leg, no joke.
I had a overspill of diesel from the tank side of my tractor... Upon seeing the the ticks, i whiped my hand over the diesel "spil" and rubbed over my leg, some of tht ticks had dug in. Upon the diesel being applied, they all fell off. And I mean ALL I watched them fall in amazment upon a straightaway of cutting.

So, it's not great to go greasing yourself in diesel, it beats getting a disease from a tick.. But to me the take away is, check yourself completely after being in a tick area and treat appropriatly. In my case with #2 fuel LOL

A note on chiggers (redbugs)...

I wanted to throw in a line or two regarding chiggers. Just in case you missed a spot when you sprayed yourself before going into the woods...when you get back to the hacienda, take a shower right away. Use DAWN Dish Detergent in the shower...you won't have any chiggers! The stuff is safe and works like a champ. Use it as a body wash, lather up, leave on for a minute, rinse....no chiggers...

I live in the boonies, I work in the deep woods all the time, which includes around a creek and wetlands (chiggerus habitatus maximus)...I haven't had one chigger in the last year since moving to Alabama and having been told about Dawn Detergent. I keep a bottle in the shower and guys...it works!!!

I use a product called Maxi Deet by Sawyer that you can get at Wal-Mart. It works real good keeping the ticks, chiggers, fleas off. You can even spray it on your skin.

seems like it's either DEET or Permethrin. I have some Permethrin 40% i picked up at Rural King. Was on sale for $20 or so. 4 or 6 oz i think. i mix it to spray flies in my garage. Malithion is nice too, but breaks down into a more toxic chemical (learnt that from wikipedia) I like to buy concentrated stuff and mix my own.. i've seen 99% DEET at walmart, 40%'s the highest Permethrin i've found yet.. both are insecticides AND repellants... anyone up to spray each pant leg with both products to test 'em?

Ive done this test but not side to side as you suggest. Before getting the permethrin I hosed my pants down w/ Backwoods and didnt have any problems. Ive also not had any problems w/ bugs using the permethrin I cut down. Both work real well...but the permethrin is much less expensive.

Actually, i just stumbled across this link, basically it says the best method is to velcro two guinnea's to your legs before hiking.. nah, it says permethrin is the better choice for ticks... plz read
