Surely I’m not the only person who’s distracted by the news tickertape on the screen when watching some of the news channels?
Yesterday evening I was watching Fox newschannel at a time when nothing else was suitable (out of the many channels available on Dish NW). In the midst of home video footage from the tidal waves I noticed a piece on the ticker that related to “FARMING IN THE NUDE”!
I immediately started to worry about Ralph; didn’t know whether to come to the computer and post an inquiry or wait for further developments.
I decided to wait for the ticker to make it’s round, and about thirty minutes later it was revealed that apparently it wasn’t our friend. Others (I hope) had been charged with enslaving mental patients at a group home, engaging in medical fraud, and forcing the patients to farm their property in the nude.
Surely had me concerned for the “natural gardener” in our forums though.

I wouldn't mind a quick flash of the channels ID Logo, but the constant display can be (actually is) very irritating! G

YOUCHHH...watch out for that PTO !!! /forums/images/graemlins/laugh.gif

Nude farming isn't all that it's cracked up to be!

Ohhh..tickertapes...well I don't think we are bombarded with enough information. Maybe they could also flash subliminal messages at the same time, and emit quick bursts of high speed sound bites for our brains to unravel at it's leisure.

Yea, they can be annoying but not nearly as annoying as those "bottom thirds" that almost every channel has started flashing on bottom of the screen at intervals during a show. They advertise "What's on next", "tomorrow", "next day", "next week", etc. It won't be very long before we are bombarded with product advertisements in the same way, continuously. Advertisers know that we will not get up and leave the TV during a favorite show to make coffee, go to the bathroom etc, as we do at present during a commercial break. We'll be a captive audience (as long as we want to watch the show) and they'll get maximum exposure for their advertising dollar.

It's coming .... 2/3 of your screen devoted to a TV broadcast and 1/3 evoted to scrolling advertising. The sad thing is that you can't ignore it. As long as it's scrolling or some cutsey cartoon character jumps out, your eye is naturally drawn to the movement and you have to look, therefore ... perfect for "flashcard" product advertisements. It's not subliminal but it's gettng close. I don't know what I'll do then, rent movies I suppose and rely on the internet for news.

Thanks for giving me the opportunity to rant about one of my pet peeves.

Maybe, just maybe, they'll be stupid enough to always use the bottom third or the top third.. just as long as they are consistent.

Things like that are why God created duct tape.

I used to watch CNN Headline News a lot. But I quit because of that stupid tickertape at the bottom of the screen. Yes, it is very annoying. I voted with my remote. /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Howdy Glenn9643,
Those ticker tapes are very annoying, SECOND only to the local broadcast stations commandeering about 3/4s of your screen to allow weather alerts or voting info etc.
I'd love a button on my remote to not allow that broadcast on my television, but then I guess we'd have to PAY for that... but, wait a minute, they still do that on cable too! /forums/images/graemlins/mad.gif /forums/images/graemlins/mad.gif

I find it annoying also. I was watching something on TBS or TNT last week and they had a "King of the Hill" advertisement come one, where he drives the lawnmower over the bottom third of the screen. The most annoying part is that they played sound on the lawnmower, and it drown out the movie that was on. I just turned the channel and watched something else after that.

Has anyone gone to a movie lately? I went to a movie on Sunday, and they played about 30 minutes of commercials before the movie PREVIEWS even started. I'll probably never go to a movie again now.

Most of the time I think government regulation is bad. Now that I've seen some of the garbage these advertisers are trying to pull, I think maybe we need some more government regulation, along with unbearable punishment for the violators.

I don't mind the tickertape on CNN headline news. It sometimes has entertaining little news blips ...like the nude farming one. But local stations that have to use the anoying beeps before and after the 'important news or weather announcement' annoys the heck out of me. I do not like the advertising there either.
