The information age and the internet has had a profound effect on the minds of those who work in "marketing" and they have gotten greedy and there is also a mindset that they have newly God-given "rights" to your eyes or ears.

In the old days, buying advertising space was a gamble. They bought an ad in a newspaper and hoped that you turned to that page and also hoped that you read their ad. The same for radio and television.

In recent years, media and marketing types have been quoted saying things like this "Because of the ad skips.... It's theft. Your contract with the network when you get the show is you're going to watch the spots. Otherwise you couldn't get the show on an ad-supported basis. Any time you skip a commercial or watch the button you're actually stealing the programming." That quote is from Jamie Kellner of Turner Broadcasting (CNN, TBS, AOL Time Warner) referring to PVR's but I have seen quotes about ads in general saying the same things.

Companies customers are regularly treated like theives this day and time. Take the media industry. They want it all. They want to be able to classify their product as it suits them. Sometimes they want it to be Intellectual Property that you purchase usage rights for, but if it suits them, they also want it to be a true product that people are accused of stealing. It wasn't originally supposed to be that way.

This is the way it was intended:
1) You make and sell a product. I buy the product, it is mine to use or lend as I see fit. The seller has no guarantees how it is used after the sale.
2) You sell an idea or specific bit of knowledge. I buy rights to the idea. Once I have used purchased rights to the idea, then I can use the idea how I see fit as long as I don't make money off of the idea or knowledge.

Take for instance: You watch a movie. Once you have paid to see a movie, you have paid your intellectual property license to see that content. It is no longer a new idea to you. Yet they want to re-classify and charge as a product each time you view that property on DVD, VHS, or view it broadcasted over television. In the same breath they call you a thief if you don't watch the ads.

And now people are paying out the rear for digital television. They don't even realize that their fair use rights will disappear as soon as digital television has completely replaced OTA analog broadcasts. The anti-copy bit in the data stream will effectively tell your high dollar HDTV equipment that you can't record this broadcast if they don't want you to. You can bet that they won't want you to.

Wow. I've said a mouthfull.

My 1st thougth (ouch...) when I heard about the TVBgone remote to kill all major brands of TV's. Was he should have made a device to stop this TV SPAMMING. Some thing to go between the tv and the box to filter out this overlay stuff...I heard some were that at least one broadcaster is planning on more of this type of advertising. They said it was to help offset comercial skipping by us Tivo users. And Tivo said the next gen of there box may show popups when a user is forwarding thru commercials. That last one caused a bit of a stink...

One issue I'm having is that I can't choose what channels come into MY house. The country has been divided into areas. I live in the area assigned to Charleston / Huntington WV but for local channel prefer the news and channels of Columbus Oh. I live in Oh. I spent 15 years in Columbus and know the area and the programming better. But I can't jump areas.

But ... from what I found out last weekend, even if they would let me name my own local provider I would not switch to local channels because if you get any local channels you cannot purchase national NBC, ABC, CBS & Fox channels. I like these because I get both east and west coast. I enjoy some of the west coast broadcasts. I cannot get both according to my Direct TV rep.

We are a very mobile society. I think its time congress releases the stranglehold the local stations have on their respective areas. I should be able to get news from Columbus, LA, Chicago and any other city I have an interest in.

...but the tickertapes on CNN are okay by me. : )

You just touched on another issue also.

Media companies FORCING the providers, like Time Warner, Adelphia, Dish Network and DIrecTV, into making their subscribers take packages.

Want ABC? Got to get the whole ABC bundle, which includes the Disneys, the ESPNs, and the MTVs. Ever noticed that if you have one of the above you have them all?

I want what I want and I don't want to be force fed ethnic channels or shopping channels so they can keep their subscribership up.

Moon, I also get affected by your target market with my football. I live near Charlotte, NC. I am and have always been an Atlanta fan, and not just pro football. Braves, Yellow Jackets, and Falcons woohoo. . I refuse to jump ship to Charlotte just because they are closer (and they also once employed Kevin Greene which is enough to turn my stomach, but that is another issue entirely). I used to be able to catch nearly every Atlanta game, now it is all Charlotte.

As for football, the problem above isn't the worst... this is the one that trips my trigger. Not only can I not catch most Atlanta games anymore, but we used to have 2-3 games to choose from at each time slot on Sundays. Now if Charlotte is playing in the 4:00 time slot, that is the only game they show. Period, but the 1:00 time slot would still show 2-3 different games on different channels.

So in effect, whatever time slot Charlotte plays in, I get the choice of Charlotte... or Charlotte.

<font color="blue"> Things like that are why God created duct tape.

Don't laugh. My father-in-law is so annoyed by these that he now has a strip of duct tape across the bottom of his screen. Problem solved!

getut,
I'm frustrated with that too. While I like major network coverage from both coasts, if I want to watch the Browns or Indians I have to pay for the extra sports package. We have the technology, why can't we opt for what teams / games we want to follow each week or season?

bmac,
now thats funny right thar!

I think that part of the problem is that giving the viewers wide choices requires more satellite channels, and this would require more satellites (just like it was for offering local broadcast channels). Who will pay for that? Although I watch an occasional game (Go Yankees /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif), I am not a big sports person and I don't really want to pay for all those channels that I will not watch. You might feel that way about cooking or home decorating channels. So far, the service providers (DirectTV and Dish) have lobbied hard against ala cart program packages. They have the technology, but the content providers (like Time Warner, Disney, etc) have prevented it through their contracts with the service providers. There has been some interest in Congress on requiring ala cart.

I can't stand those tickertapes/crawlers. /forums/images/graemlins/mad.gif They remind me of self centered individuals that cry for attention even tho someone else has the floor. When you start getting old, it's hard enough to concentrate without the oft times pointless/nonrelated distractions /forums/images/graemlins/blush.gif /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif
