I was looking at a 5 foot KingKutter tiller to go behind my New Holland TC30. How good are the KingKutters? I noticed the tiller works on a gear system. I noticed some tillers operate on a chain system. Which is best gear or chain? Who makes a good tiller that does not cost and arm and a leg? Appreciate some advice and suggestions.

The chain vs. gear discussion has been gone over many times in the past. Do a search on tillers and you'll see what I mean.
Many here have the first choice chain tillers (as I do) and have had good service from them. Others have either the KK gear or the CCM gear units and they're happy as well. All can be bought reasonably with the KK from dealers or retail chain stores and the First Choice or CCM units from dealer/TBN members. Click on the dealer tab at the top of the page and make some calls.

I bought the MR 175 66" CCM gear drive tiller for a couple of good reasons; 1.) I don't have to fuss with chain tension ( only one or two I saw could be adjusted externaly) 2.) it's built solid and heavy 3.) it's quite and 4.) Even after having it shipped all the way to Cali, it was cheaper than what I could have bought a medium duty chain drive tiller localy!

I run a 60" KK tiller behind a TC-30. It does a good job , no problem so far.
I've probably have about 45-50 hours on it in the 3 seasons I've owned it.
the main reason I bought this tiller, was my choices are TSC, New Holland , Deere, drive a long way, or buy online ,off pictures and ship it in.

I bought a Frontier RT1260 for my JD 3320 this year for a few reasons. It was a Great buy on a last years stock item, it was local ish - 50 miles away, and it worked right off the start with my Quick Hitch. It is Chain drive and works extremely well and is a medium duty machine wich works well with my rocky soil.
That being said had I not found a deal on one locally my thoughts were going to CCM as their price is definately right for the medium duty/high quality machines.
I did ask my landscaper/gardner uncle and he said the KK was the outstanding buy on tillers and he recommended the 72" gear drive machine for me. He has used his for hours upon end with no problems.
I do not think I have seen much junk on tillers of this size however so you will most likely be fine if you stick with any of these brands also including the Woods, Landprides, etc.

I'm satisfied with my KK. It performs fine. I did not want to spend a lot with the limited use I have for it. I was going to purchase a CCM, but decided the extra money for freight wasn't worth it. I'm still intrigued by the LandPride reverse rotation tiller. I would have liked to seen one in action on the same ground as the KK for comparison.

I've got a 6' KK tiller that's seen more than enough use to convince me it's as good as anyones tiller. I'm not a big fan of KK products as a whole, but their tiller seems to be the best product they offer. I['ve used it quite a bit behind a 60 HP tractor and for prolonged periods of use. No complaints.
The gear vs. chain arguement will rage for all of time. I'm sure that there are good and bad gear drive units as well as good and bad chain drive designs. All things being equal, I'd rather stick with the gear drive model.
Price not considered, I'd pick the KK again. Throw in the fact that it's USUALLY one of the, if not THE cheapest to buy, and it's a no brainer in my book.

Thanks guys for all the suggestions and advice on the tiller. I think I will try the 60 inch KingKutter. I am looking forward trying out my new tractor. I will post a picture or two after it is delivered. This is the first tractor that I have own. I use to work on a tractor over 35 years ago in the orange groves. Looking forward to planting a few green fields for the deer. Thanks again.
