I know this is the compact tractor section, but I thought I would get a better/quicker response hear. I am looking into buying a used JD 445. Eventually I would like to buy a rear tiller to run with it. The tractor does not have a PTO. Is the PTO required to run a tiller attachment?

Probably an easy answer, but I will be a first time buyer/owner, so please excuse me lack of knowledge. Thanks for you help.

Gobucks,
I figured the 445 to have a pto. Anyway, John Deere makes tillers for smaller garden tractors that are specific to each tractor. I also have a 335 and they have two different tillers available.
Both units you have to remove the mower deck and install a different device. One is a belt drive and the other is a hydraulic.

Yes you will have to get the pto kit and the 3 point hitch. That stuff will cost about $1000. I don't know
if the hydro tiller from the x series will work on the 445.
I was going to buy a used 425. But time I bought 425, front blade, pto, and 3 point hitch, I would had
$6300 in it with trade. I bought a 2210, 54"deck and 210 loader was $10500 with trade. It comes with
pto and 3 point hitch. And 3.9% for 5 yrs. And 2 yrs warranty. And its new.
The 445 is a good tractor and if you can get good deal on it, go for it.

Thanks for the info. The $1000 that you mentioned for the PTO and 3-point...would that be the installed dealer cost for new parts?

FYI..the tractor is a 1994 445, 60" deck with 250 hrs. Looks very clean. Looks like I might be able to get it between $5000-5500. Seemed like a pretty good price from what I have seen, but I am not sure about that without the PTO and 3-point. Any thoughts?

Thanks again.

Hi

You don't say how much land you have to mow or what you want to do but personally, unless you are maxed out budget wise, before I would spend 6500 plus tiller for a 9 or 10 year old garden tractor I would spend a few thousand more and get a 2210 or bx. But is always easy to spend someone elses money, just something to think about
