Tiller? Box Blade? Pulveriser?

I have seen ones made locally that are longer (front to back) and I would think would do a better job.

The landplane I built has 60" skids on it, if I built another one I would consider 72" to 84". This amounts to drawing a long straight line with a 12" ruler rather than a yardstick.

Thanks everyone for the replies. Unfortunately they snow hit before I could get pictures taken. After many hours of research I have elected to go with a box blade for my first attachment. It will work well for smoothing out rutted parts of the track and overall surfacing. However, when I measured the width of the rear tires (13.6 x 28 R-1's on 12 x 28's) I was surprised to find that it's going to be about 76 in to clear the outsides of the tires. My main question is this! Can this tractor (FORD 3000 with a 3 cyl diesel) handle an 84 in box blade/scraper box ?? If I ever got a PTO tiller could it handle an 84 inch one? Thanks in advance for your time!

A bigger question is: can the Ford 3000 go slow enough for a tiller? You need to run a tiller at or near 540 PTO rpm. You also need to go very slow. That means either a creeper gear or a hydrostatic transmission. A manual 2 speed gear box won't go slow enough at the required PTO speed.

If you went with an 84 In. box blade I would go with something like a United box blade. I would not go with a very deep box that would hold a large volume of dirt. Sounds like the landplane, or leveling blade and a box blade would be a good start. In regards to the tiller, I would say you should try renting one or borrowing one from someone before going out and purchasing one because a lot of the 3000 and 4000 series tractors do not have the slow ground speeds to really operate a tiller well. You could find yourself riding your clutch a lot to slow down your ground speed. I would diffidently try a tiller out behind that tractor before just going out and purchasing it.

My tractor is a rare 3000 and does have the select-o-speed transmission. Tractor data says at 2000 RPM it'll be doing 1.5 mph. Is that slow enough? I don't think the PTO on this thing has ever been used. I bought it from a neighbor who says his dad only ever used it to rake hay. It's got 2171 hrs. Not knowing a lot about tractors I didn't test out the PTO before I bought it. I know, not the smartest idea but it was close and the price was under $3000. The tractor looked good and worked well as far as driving around, clutch functioned and brakes worked. Transmission shifted nice and smooth and the 3 pt went up and down. When I got it home I almost took the 4 bolts around the PTO out to uncover the shaft but found out from a co-worker that the cap just screwed out. When I took the cap off the shaft looked new. This brings me to a new question, there is a chrome lever on the dash that says PTO so I'm guessing this is an independent PTO? What is the best way to test out the PTO? Can you turn it on without a load? It's been cold so right now it's just sitting in a building and I havent tried it out yet and am somewhat fearful that if it's never been used, there's a chance it doesn't work! On the other hand maybe it's in "like new" condition and will last me a while. Is a 3000 powerful enough to hook up to an auger for moving grain?

I've worked on motorized things all my life (head gaskets on cars, mechanic for my boys who race motocross, etc) and typically pick things up quick but am totally new to tractors. Thus far, just looking it over I've been impressed with the complexity for a machine that was born in 1967.

Thanks again for your time!

As discussed a tiller requires slow ground speed. I have drug my tiller along at a good clip when set to cut only 1 inch. Just wanted to loosen up the top.

Have you thought about a tandem disc? Your Ford should be able to pull a 6 foot with ease. A disc would allow you to travel at a faster rate of ground speed. The disc would do a pretty good job of cutting through and loosening up the track.

Now if you want smooth for a finish job a land plane does the trick for me. You can set the land plane to dig or just level by adjusting the 3 point top link. Again maybe a 6 footer. My land plane will move some dirt from one place to another - but not like a box blade.

If you have the 10 speed Select o speed transmission your first three gears are 1.0, 1.4 and 1.6 mph. These three speeds would be ideal for rototilling from my experience.

Thanks for the replies! I saw that everything attachments has a 78" box blade which will accomplish covering up the tire tracks. Free shipping too so I will probably go with that. As far as the roto tiller goes I will probably rent one and see how it does. This definitely won't be my last post as I have noticed an oil leak towards the front of the engine. My guess is the front main seal is out and I will probably tackle that once it warms up a little bit.
