Thank you to all for the suggestions, I will give them a try and see what develops.
Earlier in the afternoon I decided to just leave it in the current position and finish the tilling at hand and then fiddle with moving it at a later time. My original desire to move it stemmed from my being about half way through 4 acres of tilling and eventually got tired of dodging tree limbs as the trees have grown.
However, after tightening everything up, when I did a test run, I could hear something tapping from inside the compartment enclosing the chain drive. I guess I may have knocked something out of alignment when trying to free the gearbox. I didn't pound on it *that* hard, and the outside of the bearing at the chain drive shows no lateral movement or deformation, but...clearly I did something.
I considered just using it a bit and seeing how it goes, but I figure better judgment is to take the cover off the chain compartment and see what's going on.
