Tiller Tiller info

Looking to put a tiller behind my MX5100 and i found a new Bush Hog RTS74 at a dealer in town for $2300, they say it is a 2010 model. So I'm needing your opinion on what to look for in tillers. And any info on this one I've found.

That seems to be a pretty light duty tiller in my opinion weighing in at only 525 pounds, featuring only 4 blades per flange and a chain drive. On the Bush Hog website, it says that a slip clutch is optional. I believe that a couple of the best tillers on the market for the money is the King Kutter II and the Phoenix T10-74" model. Both of these gear driven tillers feature 6 blades per flange, weigh over 700 pounds, come standard with a slip clutch, and are in the same price range as the Bush Hog you mentioned(brand new from the factory). The ones on our website are forward rotating however they do make a reverse rotation tiller for about $150 more. Some people like reverse, some don't. Reverse rotation tillers are known to pulverize the soil very fine so it is a disadvantage in our red clay here in NC. If you till it too fine here, you have red concrete after it rains!! With a forward tine tiller, if you want your soil finely tilled, just lower the tailgate and go slower or make more passes. Here's a pic of the reverse rotation tiller:

I have the King kutter from TSC, same as EA, I cant say enough good about it! I use a forward rotation, and I have no experience with reverse ones.

PS I paid $1400 for my 60" which is too small for you likely.

It depends on what you are getting into. Forward,,, for soft ground, it will tolerate rocks without too much frustration, and is great for incorporating deep mulch.

Reverse,,, for hard compacted ground with few rocks, they do a miserable job at incorporating mulch because it just pushes it forward into a big ball under the 3PH, and rocks can be troublesome. If you want to hire it out, this is the one you want. It seams a lot of my new costumers call after trying it themselves and run into a problem of some sort.

Get the forward rotation, and gear drive for your size tractor.

Just be advised that the tiller will pile the dirt behind the tiller, and take it from the other end of the row. Try to get customers to set up the garden so you have complete access to all 4 sides(including turning) at all times. After you till a few times you will see what I mean.

Being able to get in and out on all four sides is a luxury that is seldom available when tilling for hire. There is usually something in the way ; bushes, fence, building, flowers, property line, etc. Besides, a reverse tine tiller is advertised as a one pass tiller and it generally works out that way. Occasionally I'll till a couple of gardens with a fence on all four sides and have to drive through a small gate to get in.

I use a forward rotation tiller with slip clutch and 6 tines/rotor with chain drive. This is a Deere 673 72" width and it does a great job for me, I have hit some large rocks and on a couple of occasions has stopped the tiller but no harm done. What small stumps that were missed in clean up the forward rotation will climb over without damage. in most cases the forward tine rotation will climb over an obstacle whereas the reverse tine will hang up. For hire i would use the forward rotation.

I know what you mean. One neighbor I till for I can only do 3 sides. The garden is about 100 feet long, and 30 feet wide. The long passes pull the dirt to one end of the garden.
