There is a tiller going locally which is not to far to go and is pretty well priced but its a 7 row, we have a 35hp which i think will be marginal, seller was running it behind a 45. could i disconnect the 2 outer tiller blades therefore making it a 5 row tiller to lighten the load on the pto?

You can but the rotor without tines will interfere with depth control and the unprotected rotor flanges will wear rapidly and soon will not be able to accept tines should you decide to reinstall them. If you have a hydrostatic transmission try tilling with all the tines.

I run a 6 ft tiller (seven sets of tines, but 6 on a node -- not quite sure what you mean by rows) behind a Kubota L3400 (geared). No problem in worked soil, will require two or three passes in established sod. Our soil is mostly clay, with a very shallow organic layer.

I have removed tines with no problems noted.
