Anyone know of a good 3 pt tiller that is cheap cheap cheap. I hate the thought of plunking $1,000 down for a tiller I only use twice a year.

Anyone want to sell a used one in VA?

If it's cheap, cheap, cheap how's about a spade. Think of the cardiovascular workout and resulting benifits.

I bought a First Choice from Carver, $947 including shipping. Haven't used it yet but it looks to be heavy duty. It came highly recommended by other TBN members.

I think a tiller is something that you want to be heavy duty. They take a pounding, especially if you have clay soil as I do.

If you feel confident about evaluating the condition of a used tiller, you might check at any places near you that sell the gray market tractors. Fella near me brings in used tractor/tiller combos and would probably sell a tiller separately.....in fact, I've heard he will sell his kidneys if the price is right....don't know if they work either.

You might go to the Yanmar forum and read the thread on "Yanmar tillers". For a couple of years, I tilled a neighbor's garden until he ran across an old Yanmar tiller at an auction and bought it for $250. It wasn't very pretty; faded, worn paint, a little rust, etc., but it worked just fine.

I just bought a 54" Yanmar tiller for $300. Most any of the grey market dealers will have a couple sitting around. If you get one of the grey market ones, change the oil as soon as you get it. The oil in mine was dirty but not too bad. I could easily see the gearbox full of water...

Depending on how big your garden is, a cheaper option is a two bottom plow. I bought one used (from John Miller III!), and I use it to plow my garden. It works great!! You just need to figure out a pattern to plow in so you keep turning the soil in the same direction. I'm a little slow, so it took me a little while to figure that out, but it digs deep into the soil and just flips it over. Then I go over it with my landscape rake to even it out, but this spring I hope to upgrade to a set of disks, that I'll find used someplace.

Bird,

Any idea how I can find a "grey market" dealer in my area. I have not been able to find any so far.

Reggie Ferguson has a lot in Emporia, VA and I think he has one in Suffolk, too
