Tiller tiller vs disc/harrow

   / tiller vs disc/harrow #11
I see quite a few of those 4, 5, and 6 foot discs around at dealers, and I agree they must be some kind of a curse. I think that the only ones I have seen that seem heavy enough to do any good in the smaller sizes are the Monroe-Tuflines and some of the construction equipment ones I have seen pulled behind dozers. Having a 200 lb disc is about as useful as having 100 bulls on a diary.

What I like even better are those small 3 and 4' discs for use behind lawn mowers and atv's.. looks like they use 2 concrete blocks for ballast.... doesn't look like they would do any good unless they were discing loose pack styrofoam beads...

I just bought a 6 1/2 Foot double gang disk, whith the first gang being a Serrated set of disks. It did a fair job cutting up untouched soil but when I added a large rock to the back of it, the preformance dramtically improved. I would estimate that with the rock and the disk the total weight is around 1200 lbs. I also have the gangs set at the sharpest possible angle.

Mirror, what do you pull that 6 1/2 foot harrow behind? I have been looking at one, but I want to be sure that I have enough HP to get the job done.

I also use a 6.5' double ganged disc harrow, and i have 50# suitcase weights off of it ( chained on ). Not sure of the total weight, but it cut virgin soil good in 2 passes.

I pull mine with a 33hp NH 1920.
