I kinda feel like this is a dumb question and has probably been covered before, but I have a question about rocks, tillers, and food plots. The area we hunt is known for its rocks. (The name of the nearest town is Rockford.) The rocks range from bowling ball size and smaller. Will a tiller last in this type of soil or will it constantly be tearing up?

A well adjusted slip clutch should take you a long way.

If you can plow first and remove the big rocks, it'll help.

But as said, make sure you have a slip clutch.

Inspect the bolts on each tine before and after you till. Tines are expensive, and even with a slip clutch the bolts break off, leaving the tine behind.

In any event, I suspect you don't need to till for a feedlot - you are probably gonna grow grasses or corn or something and you don't tell for those. Maybe a plow or disc or something ...

IMHO you get what you pay for especially regarding tillers. A quality tiller should last.

You'll soon find out that your nerves don't last as long as the tiller when you start hitting BIG rocks !!!!!

There are a few variables. Some soil will cling onto rocks making them immovable objects. Some rocks seem to grow roots. DRY rocky soil is harder to till (in all the cases I know of personally) than moist rocky soil.

SOME tillers won't take that sort of abuse on a regular basis. Some will.

I've tortured and tormented a KKII 6'er in rocky ground for 8 years. I broke 2 tines. That's all. Not bad.

But a big rock will make a tiller bounce and rattle!
