Take a look at these photos - you can see that moisture gets in. This will give you all an idea of what you will see. Rust starts to form.

I now know why the whole area of the steering system is subject to risk. Water -it gets in there and does damage. Water is an excellent corrosive.

One last thing. I don't know what the markup is on this shock.
I would assume that the dealer would make 20% margin - at least. The part is made in Mexico. Based on our Strategic Sourcing initives at work and various activities related to cost reductions - I would think that the finished good cost for a product like this would be about $25-30. By the time it gets to me - the price is $183. Just my thoughts.

Sure glad I decided to get a TC18 rather than a 21D or 24D - one of my decisions was that I didn't need to pay a lot of extra $$$ just to get a tilt wheel.

Don,

I sometimes think the sucker has too many things I don't really need.

But.. sure is nice when everything is in order.

I picked up the new part today. Paid the nearly $200.

I installed it in about 2 hours. It works great and has a 90 day warranty. To me - that's not long enough considering other folks have replaced the unit more than once.

They did improve the part by adding some grooves - supposedly for the water to drain out??? Also - I was told by the dealer that they had changed the part in some way - but he did not know how. I hope they made the cylinder more robust and longer lasting. It is relatively straight forward to replace it - but really is a pain. The dealer said that the techs complain about it.

One other thing - don't be surprised to find metal fittings pressed or molded into the fiberglass/plastic - and those sometimes spin or even crack out. I'm talking about the bolts that hold the dash and side panels on.
