Sorry to hear about the engine, were you personally able to rebuild it or did you have to take it to the shop?

After you mulch the area do you leave the mulch there? or if so one wants it removed do you do that? Is the area able to be grassed over? I know lots of questions

I took it to CAT because i was 2 months out of warranty...Cried to them about what happened and asked for even a 50 % participation in either a rebuild or replace...They agreed to consider that depending on the teardown results of what actually failed and said until they got into it I was responsible...Of course once they got into it they said they couldnt warranty anything due to the fact of the amount of sand in the crankcase.Scored the crankshaft journals and cylinder walls badly. Didnt want to bring it home in a box and was already there so gave the go ahead for the new engine complete with new turbo....

I leave the mulch there-never had any request removing it.helps keep down erosion in some areas.dont think grass would take to well to it depending on how deep the layer of mulch is.

I'll help out with this one....RT, We often offer to grass the mulched area for "FREE" when we bid some projects. Especially if it is in a high visibility location. After several trial and errors, We found we need 100-150lbs of rye per acre for sufficient results. 50# per acre does not cut it because of the seed lying in the freshly ground mulch. It sometimes washes too deep under the chips with a lot of rain and rots or something. The grass is purely for looks so that the general public can see the change over a few weeks. The trees that are left really stand out against a bright green backdrop/bottom. The mulch protects and keeps the seed moist and warm for rapid germination. We do our seeding by hand with a brodcast seeder and do nothing but spread it on top of the ground and let mother nature take over.
Like I said it is for looks. All mulched jobs look better to me a few weeks after the job is complete. All the mulch takes on a silver/gray color and starts to all blend together and lay flatter after a few rains. This spring we will continue to experiment with different types of summer grasses.
Yes you can mow over most jobs in a few weeks, but the longer you wait the better. or at least mow up high a few times and then lower deck as the mulch rots. Not only is the mulch an erosion barrier it also replaces nutrients back to enrich the topsoil. If we removed it, you would loose some of the great benefits and increase the job costs due to hauling. We move some but advise against it if you want to maintain a "forest" look.
We also offer maintenance at a resonable rate to keep it managed. After the investment to mulch it many customers want to keep it groomed. After mowing first with the brush cat we can mow with a Zero-turn X-Mark. A little tough on the mower but much faster and cost efficient than anything else. @ $60 per acre if mowed every two -three months! Hope this explains it:cool:

Thanks for the anwsers, so if you seed with the grass do you still leave the mulch after the grass grows? if so i guess i will compost in? Or does the mulch need to be removed once the grass starts growing?

I am just thinking of yard mulch and the way it makes thinks not grow through i understand there is more stuff in yard mulch and therfore much more dense of a product. i just wonder how the grass will grow with all the mulch there.

tks Shane

RT instead of thinking of yard mulch try this analogy-Hydro-seed. When a paper mulch is added to a slurry of seed and fertilizer, grass will grow on a concrete block. especially rye.And no the mulch is never raked up, it decomposes and if any is large enough to be hit by the bushhog it gets cut again. It may seem rough on the blads during the first cuts but the results and rewards to the land are worth it.:)
The mulch does and is thick enough to ****** the invasive shrubs and undesireable plants long enough to get it cut a few times. just like cutting an extra pass every time you mow your yard you will eventuall reclaim the wood line back to clean yard.
