Timber Frame Hybrid Home - Owner Builder

The foundation was set to begin about now however all of the rain this spring has pushed our contractor back a couple of weeks. Looks like its going to be the 1st or 2nd week of June for the foundation work to begin. In the meantime I just picked up the pine T&G for the ceiling. It's 6" white pine that we plan to start staining now so that its finished when it goes up. We have two pallets of 16' and one pallet of 12' so that should give us plenty to work on for awhile. The T&G will go up anywhere there are timbers in the ceiling. The stick frame portion of the home will get sheet rock with the exception of a few areas that we may use some T&G for accents.

Beautiful stuff, though.

We plan to use alder for the cabinets. Floor will be hickory so we want something a little different for the cabinets to break it up.

I went with Ash and tile for our flooring for the same reason.

Couple of updates. We've finalized the cabinets for the house. After looking at Kraftmaid and a few others at HD and Lowes we ended up going custom. We had three custom bids and the one we chose was very close in price to Kraftmaid from HD. We were also the most impressed with them. They had lots of questions about our habits, lifestyle, use, how many kids, guests, etc. They took the time to really make sure what they were putting together fit our needs and wants. We walked away from the initial meeting really impressed and didn't expect their bid to be so competitive. They will be doing the kitchen, master bathroom vanity, and laundry room. We were able to have the timber frame company move one of the interior posts so that it made room for the island to fit between the two interior posts in the kitchen. Counter tops will be granite. We really liked the idea of doing concrete countertops but after talking to a few people about sealing and maintenance we've decided against them. Sketches below.

Did the cabinet quote include the finish? A lot of the time, the cost of finishing the cabinets is as much as the cost to have them built.

Yes it did Eddie. Quote was for fabrication, finish, and install. Countertops were quoted seperate.

Also forgot to mention that if the weather holds our foundation contractor is planning to start dirtwork next week. When talking to him he mentioned that he had an old post and beam outbuilding he thought was at least 100 years old. We were offered any lumber we wanted to salvage before he did. We made the trip out a few days ago to take a look.

There wasn't much usable lumber left but it did have four large posts that were in great shape and a few smaller beams that I'd like to salvage. I've got plans to hang three of the post horizontally with chains in the loft and hang track lighting from them if we can get them out of there. Several of the post and beams still had the wood pegs in them. Here's a few pics.

Around here it's a viable business to take down timberframe barns and reclaim the wood. People pay big money for the hand hewn beams.

I would find a way to incorporate them into the design too! Once that stuff is gone, it's gone and it's so nice to preserve the past.

We recieved a little bit of disapointing news today. The timber frame company is running behind on the current projects they are working on. Our raising date has been pushed from the end of July to the end of August. Foundation will still start in a couple of weeks but we can't do much more until the frame is up so we are going to loose at least 4 weeks waiting on the frame.

I did manage to get back out to the old timber outbuilding that I plan to tear down. I was able to get the floors ripped up so I could see if any of the large timbers the post were setting on were any good. To my surprise they were really well preserved. There are at least 5 timbers that are in great shape. They are approx 12x12 hand cut timbers. All of the floor joists were hand cut and notched into the timbers. I'll see what they look like after we get them out and cleaned up but would like to possibly use one of them for the fireplace mantel.
