Sounds interesting.

So which of your several tractors are you planning to use for this work?

Or is this an excuse (make that "justification") for getting another tractor "exactly matched" for this business venture?

It might depend on what or where I'm mowing. Bigger acreage, it'll be the Deere 2440. Smaller, a mix of either the 3000 Ford or the Massey 150. I've been looking for a 165 MF. Only sure bet is it won't be a NEW ONE! I like those oldies.

I like those oldies too.

Watching eBay now for JD3020s.
Problem with auctioning these babies is the high reserve prices that the sellers set.
Haven't seen one 3020 yet that met or exceeded the reserve and got sold on eBay.

I'm envious, sounds like an excellent way to make some extra income. Better yet, if things work out, it will also help your son.

Many 4020's in this area. SOME 3020's . A friend took a 3020 powershift and retrofit a Deere 4-cylinder industrial engine (back hoe) that's a tad over 100hp. Looks dead stock (so long as you don't peak under the hood. turbo)That is one stout set up. Another I know of is in the hands of it's original owner. (1969) narrow front, ROPS and canopy, diesel powershift. There weren't that many to begin with. (Everyone bought 4020's then)

Afternoon Farm,
Gee that sounds awfully good to me also :) Out of the $75 per hour have you figured out how much will be operating cost ? Just curious.

BTW, lots of JD 4020's around here also!

Lots of 4020's EVERYWHERE. They sold in big numbers over a long run.

Cost???? Can you keep a secret?

That's the plan anyway. (retirement income) I can take my lunchbox and march out the door in less than 3 years. I've made a few good choices over the years on saving enough to retire on, plus have a good pension coming. But I'd still like to have enough coming in from a part-time source to cover living expenses. My son will help me as needed. (He's that "1st employee" I was referring to) I'm not interested in making this a fulltime (40 hrs +) job. The 20 hour figure looks good to me. With normal growing seasons here, I can expect to stay busy 7 months a year.

The more I think about it, the better it seems! ;)

And it sure beats being a WalMart greeter :)

You might consider subletting some of that work also. I myself know how making a bid pay in Ky is hard. But to be honest I would be happy to mow for you in South Central Ky at 50 an hour leaving you 25 an hour for cashing the check...Sounds like a win win to me lol

There's a local guy near me who's been in the business for over 25 years. He cuts all the big properties with an older IH 88 series and a 15' woods batwing. Looks like an older guy > 65.
I'm this close (index & thumb about 1/4" apart) to just asking him if I can buy his business when he retires. I probably don't have 80 acres yet. I bet he has 500. Would like to know what kind of money he makes.

I can't believe how much I enjoy this field mowing business after only 3 years. So **** relaxing and then plowing snow in winter. I could retire from construction tomorrow. (I know I won't because the money is too good).

I just don't know HOW I'm gonna unseat the local big time old timer!

Being a polite and respectful person that you are, you approach him and ask him what you posted above?? Is it for sale when you retire?? Or before then??

Good luck, and keep us posted.

That is a business I would like to do as a side thing.
