I have been told that it is best to buy implements and tractors even during the winter when the dealers are needing business. Is this true? Should I wait to shop for a mower till the off season?

rotary mower.

With the rotary mower, I wouldn't personnally think it would matter much. Folks can use them pretty much all year for clean up whereas sickle and finishish mowers may be "on sale" during the winter months. I've found the best time to brush hog is in Oct when everything is dying anyway. My $0.02 worth. BobG in VA

I agree with BobG. Sept/Oct you could probably catch a finish or sickle mower on sale, end of season or close and they want to unload them. Bushhog I don't think it matters as much.

When I worked at a dealership, you could get a better deal on just about everything during the winter. The best deals were on equipment that was on hand and didn't have to be ordered.

thanks for the information. I guess I will put of buying for a little while as I still have the use of a brush hog till winter anyway.

In my experience, fall is good, winter is bad. In the fall dealers are focused on unloading existing inventory so they don't have to carry it on the floor or on the books through the winter. By the time real winter hits (January, February) they have already mentally taken the hit for the inventory and are looking forward to spring when they know the market on this stuff will be better.

That's been my experience.

I might add that your location as well as the type of dealer could make a difference. In the deep-south it wouldn’t make as much difference. In the far north the dealers may be happy with their snowblower business. Some of you guys that live in both extremes might pipe in and let us know if that is right.

I agree.. Another time when items might move are whnt he next years units show up... the dull 06's with a bit of surface rust may go a bit cheaper than the shiny 07's. And if there is an 05 still setting there new.. it may even be burning a whole into a pocket somewhere..

JerryG is right about location. Not much winter in south MS, I generally cut grass and bushhog till early-mid Nov just not as often. A sale around here is a couple of hundred off a $2000 purchase, not bad but I've seen and read about better in KY and a couple of other places. The new year model stuff seems to lower prices more. An example: A guy with a new RFM on his lot quoted me $1300 last week, said they weren't moving too fast either. I was buying a disc from him so seeing a possible future sale he told me he could do better in a couple of months. Told him I'd see him in September. He said wait till October when grass cutting slowed. He's a Mahindra dealer and told me he'd also take my new MF 1533 in trade and make me a great deal on his tractor then. Maybe timing AND location are better than just timing.
