I always thought it was the other way around... Why do boat trailers use surge brakes instead of electric... and the answer is due to how they are backed into water. I could be wrong but that's just why I thought they were used.

I've been looking at those also but don't care for the tiny axle. As somebody else suggested you will get a much better trailer if you go up to the next sized trailer which will handle a yard of gravel or up to a cord of dry firewood.

I壇 be concerned about the panels rather than swinging gate. If anything slides up against the back panel while you drive down the road, you might be up in back, shoveling it out or trying to move all the branches, before you can remove the panel so you can dump the rest. That would keep me from buying this design.

I think I壇 look for a swinging gate version or something else. People always underestimate the importance of gate functionality. I did, and am having to have my gate hinges rebuilt because of damage during the dump, secondary to poor design. This is the reason I知 very cognizant of how trailer gates work.

I can’t sleep so here is some long winded thoughts.

I happen to have my “hid from wife’s view from the house beer drinking outdoor glide chair” right close to my 5x8 CAM dump trailer behind the shop causing many hours of pondering its various advantages and disadvantages as I work my way through a quiet beer or 13 before going in the house.

1. It is handy but I will convert the dump gate to a swinging type barn door for this reason also.
When hauling trash or brush, then the tailgate ends up on the ground with the load on top of it during the dump. Which means a pull forward dragging the gate until the pile is cleared off. PITA it’s pretty **** heavy to take off and likes to pinch the **** out of you reinstalling.

2. Per another poster, a load of gravel will seriously overweight it.
Payload is around a ton.
Gravel or sand at 2800 lbs a cubic yard means it it capable by volume of holding 2.2 cubic yards roughly. That is 6160 lbs! It can’t quite carry a half full load safely.

Firewood cord equals 128 cu feet. The trailer only holds 60 Or around 2.2 cubic yards. So a cord load means two trips or stake sides around 1 1/2 ft tall.
Red oak weighs 1200 lbs per cubic yard and measures 5 cubic yards roughly.

Plywood = 50 lbs per sheet roughly. 40 sheets to the ton which is the payload.

So. A 5x8 with a 3500 lb axle can easily hold a lot more than it can carry safely.
It is handy as a pocket though. Sure is nice to know you can unload it by “pushing that button”!

I too have considered this trailer. For my use I would rather invest in some thing more substantial. Seriously considering a DO 608 from Quality Steel and Aluminum. Overall build and capacity is heavier. The deck over design does raise the center of gravity but also create more under body clearance when dumping. With the wheels underneath allows easier side loading and a narrower profile while maneuvering around the yard. I only wish it had a combo tailgate as an option. Barn door for regular dumping and top swing tailgate for spreading gravel and fill.

I looked at this trailer as a possibility for a couple of uses and decided it wouldn’t be very good at either... I wanted something I could use around my property as a lawn/garden/trail use trailer. This one had the right size but terrible gate, no manual dump, and no stake pockets for loads like brush.

I did like that it was street legal but again, the gate issue and puny payload.

Couldn’t see spending the money they wanted for it. If you’re not needing it for a yard/trail trailer, get the larger “homeowner” model

I ended up with the sure trac 5x8 homeowner. Its perfect. It can fit all my equipment for transport, one at a time of course. With the new wood sides, it has plenty of capacity. The single axle is very maneuverable, which is critical for me.
