Tiny Insects With Wings???

In a summer, 1965 drive from Austin to New Orleans, an old guy at a rural Louisiana gas station told me they called them "telephone bugs"....because they just say hello and hang up /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

They sure look like gnats though I've never heard them called that! /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif They also could be fruit flies. You have any old fruit in a sack around there that you forgot about?
