Cinch down with a pair of small vice grips or pliers on between what your soldering and what your protecting. It's a relatively large amount of mass acting as a heat sink. Practice on junk parts to keep your skills fresh and like mentioned above, be quick. You'll limit the total heat migrating to places you don't want.
