Tire Ballast

Kind of a dumb question, but I've never heard it asked before: do tires need to be filled up to the max that all the online charts indicate, or can you use less? For example: my 16.9x24 tires can take 61 gal each (122 gal total). Two 55-gal drums of WW fluid leaves me 6 gallons shy each tire. 3 drums would get me to the max, but leave me with 43 gallons extra. I can't imagine it being a problem going less than the max, but who knows?

We always stop at 10 o clock.. Turn the valve stem to 10 o'clock and fill.. We use alcohol to keep from freezing in winter.. No need to drain in winter time..

You can use less. 55 gallons per tire would be fine. If using washer fluid that would give you close to 440 lbs. per tire.

I can get ww fluid for $129 per 55 gal. from NAPA.

With the cheap pump from HF and the fill adapter from TSC, I'll be in it for just over $300

Find out who is a Rimguard dealer close to you and get a quote before you start buying all the stuff. Might be easier and less headache to let a tire shop do the work and use Rimguard.

I purchased RIMGARD for $2.90 gal. That would be $160.00 for 55gal. For an extra $30.00 definitely go w/ Rimgard.

Rimguard may be a different price in his area. That's why I didn't get it. It's 3.92 a gallon where I am plus $50 for installation.
To fill my tires with 70 gallons (35 gallons each) would have cost me $$324.40
I used WW fluid for a total cost of about $180.
If Rimguard in his area is priced like my area he's looking at over $430. for 110 gallons.
PatMcD, do get a price on Rimguard. I would have used it but was too cost prohibitive in my area. If it is close to WW fluid then buy it.

I called all the Rimguard dealers within an hour of me. Cheapest price was around $500 for the to install it (122 gallons). That does not include my transportation costs to get my tractor to them (I'd have to give my neighbor at least $100 for the time).
Nobody here wants to sell me the barrels of Rimguard: they want to do it all.
So, $600 for Rimguard or $300 for WW fluid. That extra $300 can buy a lot of diesel.

I still feel I should be able to get a better deal on WW fluid somewhere. My neighbor (the same who would do any transport for me) gets the commercial discount from NAPA and it still is costing $2.35 per gallon for -20 fluid.

I had the same here. No one would sell the rimguard to me. They wanted to install and charge for it.
Not a bad price (2.35) local NAPA by me is getting $2.43 a gallon for part # WWS55minus25. $134.00 for 55 gallon drum. I didn't see -20 but there was Zero and Plus 20 WW fluid available. You could also check at W/Mart sometimes they have WW fluid on sale this time of year.

UPDATE: my neighbor got a deal on -20 WW fluid. $90 for a 55 gal drum. I ended up getting 3 and filling the tires to capacity. The cheap 12V utility pump from HF crapped out on the 3rd drum, filled the rest via gravity (I don't recommend it: extremely slow). I gave the leftover fluid back to my neighbor (he does auto repair/ oil changes). He'll use it up.
So, $90X3=$270+$38 (for HF pump)=$308

I started this thread and still haven't filled mine yet.
No rimgaurd around here, all the tire places use methanol.
I have been reluctant to use it on the chance it might leak in my shop where our dog stays.
So yesterday I started researching what they put in bittergaurd antifreeze. Turns out it is denatonium benzoate, not sure on spelling...
It is the most bitter substance known. Then came the challenge of where to buy it and how much.
Finally found a place on online that sells one gram for 26.95. But they didn't say how much per gallon.
I found on another site that said eight parts per million is unbearably bitter.
So then I had to figure up how many grams in a gallon. Water is around 3700 grams per gallon.
My head started hurting by then so I called the store, Chemsaver, the only one answering the phone today was their chemist lucky for me...
He said after much calculation 2 grams would be more than enough for 110 gallons. So for 56.00 I have enough ordered to treat my tires and not worry about the dog, cows, deer etc.
Methanol is 1.50 a gallon so I only need 30 gallons to mix with 80 gallons of water.
I should end up with filled tires for $ 101.00
I used a Fimco pump that goes on a sprayer last time and it was pretty fast. I have a 55 gallon plastic drum plumbed with a piece of 1/2" cpvc pipe to mix it in. Hopefully I will get this done by next week.
Once diluted with water it will not burn, I drained a little from my old tractor and couldn't get it to ignite with a propane torch using map gas.
