PhysAssist, just think of this as the mordern answer to an age old problem 
I also keep mine loose. I adjust them the same as Sean does; so I can get my fist sideways between the tire and side chain. The self cleaning action is good in mud and snow. In the fall they will load up with leaves that get stabbed by the studs but I haven't had any traction problems because of it.
