Chains Tire Chains

What tires do you have? I have run turf tires on my 4110 for four winters and have never needed chains. And I have a long drive with a steep hill. I was going to buy them when I bought the tractor, but my dealer discouraged me. Said he would "guarantee" I would not need them and he was right. In case you are wondering, we get lots and lots of snow.

Well I have the R4 tires and I thought I would not need chains Almost slid through my garage doors , drive slopes toward my doors. I have a concrete drive. Even beside the garage in the grass down around the side of the house if I did not have chains I would not make it up around the house all winter.

As for chains I had a spare set of regular car chains with cross bars ,took and cut them to length and then took one side of the cross links loose, from one of the side chain .Then removed the large hook from the cross link . Then measured length of that cross link took another cross link laid it beside the first cross link got the length I needed ,cut that cross link to size and then welded it to the side of the first cross link .I think my cross links had 9 links plus then I took 4 or 5 plus the end hook and welded it to the side of the 9 link.
Took about 2-3 hrs all total , Able to use mig welder, grinder , this was about 6 years ago. I have plowed 4 concrete driveways, church and several hardtop drives and have about 100-125 hrs on chains driving tractor on main road to these driveways I haven't had to weld or replace any crosslinks since I made the set of chains.
Reason for making these , cheaper since I already had a spare set of chains. Plus chains I had gotten from dealer for my 425 was almost worn out after 3 winters. They were suppose to be a heavy duty set of chains when I bought them from my JD dealer.
Plus my father in law made his chains about 28 yrs ago for his tractor (2WD). His tractor had turf tires and we could do nothing without having chains on.
In past 28 years he has replaced maybe 8 cross links. We used his tractor to plow all the above drives .plus mowing and every project we had. Only difference his has been on his tractor year around I take mine off at the end of the plowing season.
Good luck on your choice!!!

Hello, I would say try it without chains if you haven't already. I have r4 tires and plow a 75 foot long drive in 2 wheel with a 400# weight box and no chains. I sometimes put it in 4 wheel when needed.

I put 1,000 Lbs of weight in the ballast box on my 2520 with R4 tires, and its like I have racing slicks on it. The R4 tire is NOT a snow tire. Yes its OK in snow, but has absolutely zero side-bite, and if you have side hills, you will slid twords the bottom real often!
I put V bar chains on, and that made a world of difference, but they TRASH my paved driveway.

Ok, i'll agree with that, hills and slopes change everything.

Yea look at my photo at left , my garage doors are appx 100' down that slope.
Gets very hairy, very quickly, even with blade down when you are sliding on the ice.
