TIRE CHOICE 2210

I agree with Stan. When I was trying out mowers last year I thought I wanted to go with the R4's or something like them. All of the mowers that I tryed scuffed or tore up the lawn at some point, esp. going up and on sidehills. I finally went with just straight turf tires for my 455. Plenty of traction and no more scuffing or tearing up of the lawn. If it's just pasture mowing it would be fine but for your house lawn it looks pretty bad.

Roadapple,

Do not make the mistake of thinking that the 23 HP 2210 is more tractor than the 4010 with 18.5 HP. In many cases including Fel and 3ph you will find the 4010 to be the "bigger" tractor of the two. On the other hand, if you are going to be using the rear PTO for much of what you do, the 2210 will deliver more power. Take it for what it's worth (I own a 4010), but I think the 4010 is more tractor for the money. My uses include mowing 3 of my 7 acres, maintaining a 500 foot gravel driveway using a 5 foot box scraper, clearing snow with the Fel and using the boxscraper and the my 50 inch mechanical tiller to reclaim more of my land and turn it into lawn. I have not run out of power with this machine--I will always lose traction first and I've done some serious work with the box scraper. The area where I have maxed the tractor out is the Fel--this is an application where the 4010 has more capacity than the 2210.

Also--there has been some discussion on this site as to what size box scraper you can effectively pull with the 2210. Most are saying 54 inch would be the max. Check with your dealer to be sure.

Lastly--regarding tires--we had 12 inches of wet snow last week. I cleared the driveway with turf tires and ran in 2 WD half the time. While I will use the tractor for projects where I wish I had more aggresive tires, the vast majority of what I use the tractor for is related to maintaining my lawn or driving over the lawn and I wanted tires that would do the least damage. We have sandy conditions and I think the more aggressive tires would do a lot of damage.

Not saying the 2210 isn't a good machine--just make sure it's the right machine for you. I've looked at the 2210 when I had my tractor in to be serviced--for my needs, I'm glad I got the 4010.

Good Luck

Bob

I run turfs on my machine and it's real wet out here in the west and have never had any problems. I do think the R4's look cooler though /forums/images/graemlins/cool.gif.

I'm sure someone makes an R4 in that size. I have no idea why it wouldn't meet the spec.

I ordered my 2210 with turfs and a set of mounted front bars. I still have the mounted rear bars from my 445--same part number and load rating as the bars for the 2210.

The mounted front bars were a little over $200. A new set of mounted bars for the rear are probably closer to $400. You might be able to find a used set of mounted rears from a 400 series tractor, buy the mounted fronts from your dealer, and have the best of both worlds.

Wheels are typically more expensive than the tires. especially when you are looking at tire prices purchased directly from the maker. I think that is universal across all manufacturers. I'm sure you can order rims alone or aftermarket, but you probably won't find many on "list price" lists. Admittedly, JD's list prices are high, but I'm sure the cost of an extra set of mounted tires (from your dealer) for that Boomer of yours a'int cheap either /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Yup a set (all 4) of mounted tires for my tractor lists for $843! Not bad compared to the 2210 considering they are significantly larger.

Okay. You win. /forums/images/graemlins/smirk.gif

Now if you can find a place to buy after-market wheels for the 2210 or the Boomer, you'd most certainly be my hero /forums/images/graemlins/cool.gif

Has anyone taken delivery recently of a John Deere 2210 tractor with R1 tires?

I am still waiting for my 2210 to arrive. The tractor was ordered back on November 30, 2002 with R1 tires. My dealer tells me the delay in receiving the tractors is because Titan, the manufacturer of the R1 tires for the 2210, has not been able to supply the tires to John Deere.

Anyone else heard the same story?

My front R1s are Titan and they arrived with the tractor. My old R1s in my garage are also Titans, but that doesn't have anything to do with your question.

My tractor delivery is/was not delayed by tire availability. It is delayed by another parts shipping mistake. My 2210 has been sitting in the dealer's shop for about a week waiting for the correct loader hose kit to arrive. Could be today.
