Let's see if I can get this right this time...... "Necessity is the Mother of Invention".

I grooved a pair of R4s few years ago. I did it for hard pack dirt traction. Saw a limited amount of improvement in that area. Didn't see any gain on snow. To make your R4s work similar to R1s you gotta take out a LOT more rubber. In the end you'll probably end up using chains if your uses are severe. Cool topic though!!!!

ovrszd - surprised you noticed little difference in snow. I had a different and much more positive experience with grooving.
