I've cleared a wooded area leaving stumps from 1 to 4" high and .5 to 6" in dia. I'm thinking if I bring up the tractor to BH out the stumps, I may puncture the tires. Tires are barred. Is there a good possibility I'll puncture the tires if I run over the smaller dia. stumps?

There is always a chance. Is there any reason not to start at one end and work you way into the wooded area. Surely a one inch stump wouldn't take long with a backhoe, and a six inch one isn't a threat. Other than that, just being careful where your tractor steps is the main precaution.

That's how'd I do it, start at 1 end and work to the other. I was wondering how careful I'd have to be. I suppose I could carefully walk thru the area and spray paint the stumps orange before I start. Maybe this is an instance where turf tires would be a better choice?

As long as the stumps are cut flat and not at an angle, I highly doubt they would puncture the tires.

I have a 14.9-24 tire out back that would argue with you on that. I ran over a 10" stump that was rotten, but the heart pine center was still solid. It was about an inch in diameter and it went right thru my tire. The cut was about as flat cut as you could get. The 7,000 pound tractor didn't like sitting on a one inch stump, and that is basically what happened.

The ordinary 1" stump doesnt have the support like the big stump underneath provided. The little flat cut stumps often just push down enuf to spare the tire if theyre not too tall, and if tall they lay over or buckle. Still, I would be very concerned running over a 1" stump more than 3 inches high or a 2" stump more 4" high with a full sized tractor with ags or turfs. Much less of a problem if the little trees had been bushogged. That loosens the stump. R4s would take the punishment easily in most any case.

Ok, silly question Spyderlk - what's the difference between an ag tire and R4, or did you mean ag/r4 could take the punishment...

N1ST, R4s are the industrial tires. R1s are Ag. The Ags are taller and narrower per size and have the more angled tread and a more flexible albeit weaker carcass.

Rather then taking a chance on it, why not systematically start at one end and work till you get to the other side. That would beat spending the money for R4 tires or repairing the existing tires should you puncture one of them.

Not sure I understand your post.

In your post is BH backhoe, or is it Bush Hog?

Either will work (if the bush hog is strong enough :)) but I would back through with the bush hog and it will shatter the stumps, if it is backhoe, just start in one corner as many have said and just keep it working in the clear area.

I am clearing some of my land, and just bush hogging repeatedly to break down the stumps and beat them into submission. Will one go through a tire..... probably, has not yet, but it could be I just have not hit them "right" yet.

I am having more problems on my place with old scrap steel, nails, pallets etc. Nothing like seeing a pallet board come around on your tire, hoping the nail is in the thick of the tread and not the carcas....
