Keep all options open... always have a plan B. I retired at age 52 (US Navy) after 21 years. Some VA disability also. Im 58 now and can barely afford to live in this country (Virginia). I have been giving serious thought about retiring back in the Philippines. No Obama care, no high taxes, no heating bills, no auto insurance, etc. Figured out the other day that just ending my car insurane bill, electric bill and water bill would put 12,000 pesos a month more in my pocket. 12,000 pesos go a long way on the other side of the world. Manila has a large VA hospital, a modern hospital accross the street from the US Embassy. Wife is filipina along with all my inlaws. Lived in the Philippines for about four years so its nothing new for me. 400/500 square ft house would be fine for just the two of us. Philippines have great public transportion (no where I live now). Just my retirement pay would be about 5000 pesos a day and most filipina's live on 100 or 200 pesos a day. Probably need to do it before obama cancels all US passports.

A lot of ex-Navy guys go back to where their wife is from. One of my classmates is retired Navy. Him and his wife live in Puerto Rico so she can be close to her family. It's 80 degrees everyday, and you can just about set your clock by the afternoon thunderstorm. Or at least it was that way when I was down there.

mjarrels, with the apparent re-approachment btw the USA and the Philippines it might be even better in the future. If you're comfortable with it and you haven't anything holding you here, go for it. Not that you need my encouragement.

I'm just turned sixty five and retired.

I have an extra hour in bed every morning but after that there isn't enough hours in the day to do all I want to do, I have vehicles that have been waiting for me to retire so as they can be restored, I do odd jobs for people and service cars and generally enjoy myself.

Nice thing is like today it was tooo hot at 30c, we're not used to it over here, so I had an afternoon snoozing and reading, then when it cooled off I went in the garage and worked a couple of hours on one of my projects :)

No such thing as ex-Navy. Former Navy and Former Marines. Many retired american are leaving the US to Asia, central america and south america. Better way of life at 10 cents on the dollar. I know the Philippines have fresh fruits and veggies year round. Ripe mangos are to kill for. Want a watermellon for Christmas dinner, no problem. My biggest draw back is two kids just starting out here and I own two houses (paid for) with very large yards and can't manage rentals from 9000 miles away. No one wants to rent a house with a 1.75 acre yard. And stuff, I have too much stuff. I have my SS quarters but the wife is still working on hers. Philippines... bottle of pop... 12 cents... bottle of rum... $1.25... the BBQ on a stick is worth the trip. Christmas/New Years in the Philippines is like no other place on earth.

I didn't stay in the Navy for the long haul. I just did my hitch and got back to the farm. I have always thought of myself as ex-Navy. I was a Electrician's Mate and served on the USS Saipan. I am proud of the time I spent on her. But that was a brief part of my life thirty years ago, just like school was before that. I've spent far more time on the quarter deck of a tractor than on an aft engine room switchboard watch.

I've been retired 1 year as of July 1. Don't miss the work at all, but I do miss the people I worked with. I'm busy every day doing things for 3 to 8 hours depending on the weather (and my mood). I can't stand sitting around.
My TODO list never gets any shorter and there are so many things I want to complete.

I wouldn't even think of looking for a job. Ya gotta save some years for your self at the end!

...and for those of you still working, keep it up! I need the SS.
