Guys,

I don't think this twist has been talked about, but if it has, my apologies up front. When I bought my ymg1800d last fall, it had what I think are ag tires (criss-cross pattern of the tread). I have read all the posts talking about tires and I notice people mentioning rice tires and turf tires. I hate to admit my ignorance, but what are rice and turf tires? What applications are the best for each of the three? When I need to replace the current ag tires, what considerations are there to changing to a different type? Thanks again in advance, I have learned much at this "tractor school"

Look on yor sidewall. If it says for Japan use only, you have rice tires. They have a much deeper tread than an ag tire, almost like paddlewheels. Turf tires are generally wider and have a tread similer to an all weather truck tire.

Frank,
Ag tires (R-1): These are the type typically seen on the rear of farm tractors, and based upon your description, I think what you have on your tractor. They provide the most traction by having the most "grip" into soil; accordingly, they also have the capability of tearing up a lawn faster than the other tire types. However, with a little extra caution, they can be used on lawn without much problem unless the ground is really soft and/or wet.

Industrial tires (R-4): These are typically seen on skid loaders (Bobcats, etc) and Tractor-Loader-Backhoes (TLBs) such as the larger Case TLBs. The tractor's cleats (I guess that's what you call them) are smaller (less aggressive) than an Ag tire and run perpendicular to the tire (where an Ag tire's cleats are at an angle). Seems like i have HEARD that the Ag tires are mostly 4-ply and the Industrial tires are something more heavy-duty and puncture resistant (6 or 8 ply?)

Turf tires look like the tires commonly seen on the riding lawn mowers and lawn tractors seen at Sears and other places.

Rice Tires: I know nothing about rice tires. I have seen pictures posted on this board, but I don't remember what they look like. Not even sure they are available in the USA except for the used tires that may come in on the grey-market tractors.

I don't know that much about Yanmars, but I'll give some information about Kubotas that will probably apply to your tractor as well...

Changing to a different type of tire USUALLY requires a different size rim. I have a set of turf tires & rims for my smaller Kubota B7100 (10" front wheels and 15" rear wheels) and also a set of of AG tires & rims for the same tractor (12" front wheels and 16" rear wheels).

Hope this helps.
