tires cut, but how?

I've seen ice grind up cement & stone, I'm sure it could cut rubber.

Looks to me as if something got caught in your chains or the chains themselves cutting your tire. I can't imagine that cut being there when you put your chains on and you not noticing it. It looks like the damage is behind the chains. Hard to believe that you rubbed up against something and it cut behind the chain. I seriously doubt vandalism.

it's possible I may not have noticed it-weather was bad while I was chaining up halfway into the winter.

and when I had them filled with beet juice I KNEW I would be sorry, instead of getting solid weights.

I know ice can cut tires but for 33+ years I've run my cars, trucks & tractor thru all the frozen puddles on my mile long driveway and never received an type of cut on any of my tires.

If you have to get a new tire the dealer can easily transfer the rim guard from the old to the new tire. It would sure be nice to figure out what caused that problem.

Another thought - if it were vandalism, why only one tire and why on the top and bottom. The bottom cut would not be that easy to make.

No, I would bet you drove close by something sharp - and made contact with whatever.

My first thought was vandalism, but I have no other indication of it -and it would have been easy for a vandal to cause a lot more trouble. At the same time I've looked all over and can't find anything it might have rubbed against.

my dealer said they'll transfer the rimguard. Another problem is Kubota used an oddball size (11.2-16) on this tractor. Now I'm thinking of changing over to R4's

I have about a 3-4 inch slice in one of my front tires that I'm guessing came from a piece of slate/shale rock. It's been there about 2 1/2 years now.

I've seen similar damage from a rock with a sharp edge. Any chance you drove close to something with a nail sticking out? Definitely a shame, but agree it doesn't really look like vandalism.

I walked all over the areas I plow and can't find anything. I'm beginning to think I did it a couple months ago in the woods

For sure that cut was done before the chains were installed.
Sharp, like dynamited rack will do that sort of cut but since the slit seems to roughly have the same radius as the rim I'd say that at some time you spun that tire near shattered rock or scrap wood that had a nail protruding.
Since no cords are showing the tire should not fail you. Even at that since all modern tire cords are synthetic they will not fail as old cotton corded tires would.

Keep driving 'til you have no more threads left.
