Tires for old JD hay rake?????

I have an old JD 851 or 858 hay rake. Right now it has bald, flat tires on it. Were these supposed to have a flat tread tire or a lugged tire? Anyone know what size they are supposed to use? I don't think the ones that are on there are the right ones. Thanks, Phillip

The tire was probably matched for the duty. If the device is ground driven.. i.e. the tire turning drives a chain or similar.. then I would think some sort of turf or ag lug would be needed. For a simple dead axle.. looks like you could use ribbed tires.

I've seen quite a few implements using common 6x16 tires
( 5x16 rim?)

What size of tire/rim is on it now?

Generally old truck tires with a tube in them and a bit of tread left is all I ever see..... Works fine.

Likely they came with some sort of treaded tire on them, in that day something with bars, but not exactly the typical tractor lug - more angled & perpendicular bars/lugs not terribly high - was a common design. Many self-powered implements with small tires (swathers, etc.) had this type of design as well.

You can use cheap used truck tires, tractor tires ( run the lug patter 'backwards' to be accurate as the implement is pulled, the tires need to be oriented reverse to what the tractor tire pattern is) or search harder for a mixed or turf pattern that you like.

It will all work. Sorry I don't know size....

It's ground driven. It has regular car type tires on it right now, just wondering if they'll hold. The rake is heavy so I don't worry about too little down pressure on them. -phillip

Smooth car tires will slip on wet grass. But not real bad.

And yes, there are days in the hay business you end up raking in wet grass - odd as that may sound. /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

Otherwise they will generally hold up just fine as long as they hold air.

I agree with rambler. When any of the tires go bad on our rakes we just go to the tire store that does our tractors and they will usually give us some old tires for the hay rake. I wouldn't waste your money buying ribbed tractor tires for sure. You can put more in tires than those rakes are worth if you buy new ones.

Up here people just put old snow tires on them. The extra tread gives lots of traction.

I had an old set of tires put on the wheels with tubes inside yeaterday. Not much as far as tread, but I guess they'll do okay. One of the ratcheting hubs was cracked and the ratched pawl was gone along with the place where it mounts. Y'all ought to see what I have rigged up.

I cut the centers out of two old wheels, welded them togeather (stacked for rigidity), drilled holes and bolted the new round plate on to the cracked backing plate of the hub, made a pawl with a 1/2" hole in one end, welded a bolt into the round plate, welded a nut on the other side of the plate and left an inch or so of the bolt sticking out for the new pawl, put it all togeather. IT WORKS!!! If it holds up out in the field then I've done something good. JD dealer wanted high $$ for that plate. It was totally shot so there is no loss trying to 1/2-@$$ repair it. I do think it'll hold up though. Crossing my fingers. -Phillip

Congrats on the farm-ingenuity rapier. And don't feel bad about cutting centers out of wheels... Over ont he ford N boards I frequent.. cutting wheel centers is an art, and gets practiced alot. Lots of folks with spoked iron wheels on many different makes of tractors have done this as well, to go to rubber.. etc.
