I was looking over the Titan website when I noticed some interesting tires.

1) Their IT 520 Radial R-4s. You can see them on the tread pattern pdf on the site. But it is an R-4 tire with deep, 45 degree single lug design. It looks like a wide R-1. Seems like a great combination with all the strengths of an R-1 in an R-4. I suspect they are pricey.

2) Versatorque Radial. This is an R-1 with a bi-directional tread. Very interesting.

3) The Dyna Torque II. This is a long bar/short bar R-1. Nothing new about that, but they claim they outpull a typical single lug R-1 by 15% on plowed ground. What does that mean? Almost any type of ground can be plowed. What is the advantage of a long bar/short bar R-1 over a typical R-1?

I've got Goodyear DynaTorque II's on my 2440 Deere and the Titan long bar/short bar on my 150 Massey. (Goodyears are pre-Titan/Goodyears) The advantage is lateral stability and reduced road vibration. Traction is more or less a wash between LB/SB and conventional tread patterns as far as I'm concerned. In fact, the DynaTorque II's have a knickname with farmers. DynaSlips. They aren't known for providing excellent traction in all conditions. The Titan LB/SB tires provide excellent grip in most conditions from my experience.

Within a couple of weeks of getting my B3030 I went out and found one of the front Titan tires flat. No problem, I'll just air it up and see where the leak is - except the bead seal was broken. Took the tire off and took it to my local tire shop to have it fixed. They didn't find a puncture but remounted the tire on the rim. Aired it up and a bubble would slowly appear on the side wall between the plies just below the rim; poke it with a finger and "psst" the bubble vents before slowly filling up again. Clearly a defect in the ply vulcanization; the tire dealer - who sells Titan Ag tires - agreed that this was an unusual problem and defective tire. Since this was a virtually new tractor I take it to my tractor dealer (hoping he has one in stock) who also agrees that the tire is defective. Unfortunately they don't stock the tire, would have to contact Titan for warranty adjustment and order one in. Turns out Titan was very uncooperative and apparently not willing to admit that a defective tire could be produced. Fortunately my tractor dealer and Kubota worked things out and made it good. Have had no tire problems since.

Now I think that Titan probably makes good tires but apparently won't admit to an occasional manufacturing defect and they're customer service stinks. Guess they don't know what a warranty means or is for! Thank goodness my tractor dealer is customer oriented and like a dog with a bone when a problem arises and that Kubota is also interested in happy customers.

Hi Whitey.. just curious. What size R4 tires did you put on the 770? If you remember what size were the R1's? thanks

I will get that info for you......the Ag tires were original on my tractor.....I went through quite a learning process in getting the right tire size. Bottom line was the rear rim size which had an Ag tire was fitted with a Good Year R4, the front Ag rim was to narrow so I bought 790 rims (same bolt pattern) and put a R4 from Titan on them. I will dig out the paperwork tonight and post tomorrow.

Have six ply Titans on the Kioti, bush hog in lots of multiflura rose and so far no problems. Have Goodyear Ultratorque radials on the IH and they seem to lack traction but that might be because I should be running duals on the back when plowing and discing.

OK, I am back.......original tire size on my early 90s JD 770....rears 12.4-16, fronts 6.00-12, both R1, Goodyear Traction & Field. (They were still available last summer). New tires on the same rear rims - 12.4-16 4 Sure Grip Lug TL (R4s) Goodyear Titan #4GL483.....since R4s would not fit original 6.00-12 front rims....bought JD 790 rims (same bolt pattern) JD # M802865, tires - 25x8.5-14 NHS Sure Grip Lug TL Goodyear Titan #4LG379. Wheels cost $ 268.00 - tires $ 715.00 mounted and old ones disposed of. Now I must admit I went through a lot to figure out what size tire to use. Especially trying to get R4s to fit existing rims. These tire sizes were figured using two methods.....loaded circumference and rolling circumference. I was within inches of both scales. I have had zero problems with either set. PS the Titan website has a dealer location part to it and I was able to find a farmer / dealer that gave me a really great deal.:D

Good Luck!
