hello everyone, need a little advice. i have a tm135 and this morning went to do a little work with it and jump in, turn the key and i hear a grinding/whining terrible noise that seems to come from the starter. Tried a few times, but the tractor would not start. any ideas? i've had this tractor since new, but a starter shouldn't be worn out at just over 800hrs. /forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif thanks in advance guys

Sounds like a stuck bendix to me. Disassembly and lubrication may help without replacement. Disconnect the battery before attempting repair to the starter.

BTW: Welcome to the TBN site!

ok, took off just the starter-- dissassmbled and inspected -- everthing looked good -- reassembled and same problem. Then i took off the whole starter assembly off of the tractor. I could see fresh grinding on 5 of the sprocket teeth on the big (flywheel?) inside the tractor. omg. what the **** happens to do this and what is the remedy? the end of the starter gears looked ok and turned easily. it appears that the (flywheel?) inside the tractor is somehow stuck. /forums/images/graemlins/mad.gif
thanks in advance guys---i was gonna work down a field today.

Farmeral, Looks like you have either a defective starter drive (sprag overunning clutch) or a stripped (teeth) flywheel ring gear. The starter drive gear shoud turn freely in one direction (engine turn) and lock up in the other direction (starter turn) while turning with a screwdriver. An even better test is to run removed starter with jumper cables and jam extended gear into a old oak hammer handle and to load it and see if it slips under load. Handle will smoke when pushed into gear. This is a messy but effective way to load drive clutch locking off the vehicle.
Or, just turn the engine over enough by hand to get the visble flywheel teeth away from starter hole and try starter again. If you get the same noise the starter drive (sprag clutch) is slipping and making the racket.
Get a new one and install it.
One last thought, MAKE SURE the solenoid is pulling the drive gear fully into the flywheel before doing the above.

cheers,
george

Your starter drive is not engaging the flywheel. Do as mentioned above with the starter out to make sure that the drive comes all the way out. It might need a lube job. Check the arm that pulls the drive out to make sure it is not broken. Also check to make sure you can spin the motor with a bar.

Check to see what lube is acceptable for the armature shaft... some liquid lubes can actually cause drag. Might be a dry lube situation.

Our New Holland service manual says white lithium grease may be used on the armature drive gear, pinion clutch, idler gear and roller bearings, and the pinion clutch steel ball and return spring. This information comes from a Class III New Holland service manual but I can't imagine any differences for lube purposes. Hope this helps.

If the newer models can use lube.. that is pretty decent. The older fords used a centrifugal pull in style bendix, that was kicked back out by the higher speed of the engine once it started. This was not a clutch style unit, so a kick out meant you had to let the starter spin down and then re-engage. For that system, and similar models, the armature had to be clean and dry... ( no wet lube ) as it was not a positive drive engagement, but merely a centrifugal engagement as the bendix spiraled up on the armature to engage the ring gear, and a wet lube provided too much drag.

Big blue worked great today but if the problem happens again, can i maybe just push/pull/or roll the tractor to move the flywheel a bit?

Are you saying that your tractor is out of warranty at only 800 hr or that you can't afford to be without it right now? ...or both?
