I have a 1401 with a hydralic problem. The lift works but when the lever is at the neutral range(mid-way) the lift will not hold. I knoe that there will be some leakage when the tractor is not running but this problem exists when the tractor is running. I have already experimented with the side lever that controls speed and the valve screw under the seat. the valve under the seat if screwed all the way in will not lock the life as it should. Could the problem be an o ring, trash etc. Thanks in advance.

Sounds like the lift cylinder O-ring or cylinder body. Does it bleed down pretty fast or does it take a while? Mine bleeds down in about 15 minutes, so I can live with it now but I know sooner or later I will have to fix it.

There is a specification for leakdown, and it is similar for most tractors of similar size. I've rounded off some of numbers below from YM186 shop manual in order to make the numbers religious. This ought to be close enough:

With the stop valve open and about 500 lbs 24" behind the hitch balls, raise the load and shut off the engine. Now measure from the end of the lift arms to the ground. It shouldn't fall any faster than about an inch in about six minutes. Both of the Yanmar hitches fall about an inch an hour....maybe less. Testing the loaders with an empty bucket, one loader passes this test - barely - and the other just fails it.
